Two free trees for every resident

Each year Council gives away more than 35,000 trees to ratepayers through the ratepayers tree giveaway scheme.

Ratepayers are entitled to two free trees between January and May by presenting their January rates notice. There are six different locations across the Gold Coast where you can collect your free trees. Your nearest location is:

• Ormeau: Brian Harris Oval, Peachy Road 1st Friday of the month (3 Feb, 2 Mar, 4 May) 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

Ormeau State School help with revegetation

The end of last school year saw 85 Grade 4 and 6 students from Ormeau State School being introduced to concepts around biodiversity and habitats in their local community. Greening Australia held a session in their class, followed by an excursion to the Stockland site to look for wildlife and plant some revegetation along the Pimpama River.

The kids had a great time finding out about some of the insects and animals that they can find in their local neighbourhood, as well as getting their hands dirty in the great outdoors. Feedback from teaching staff was that it was really valuable to introduce kids to these environments and experiences, and that the materials provided by Greening Australia to follow up on the visit were a welcome resource.

We will be offering the program to more local schools in 2012.
