Landscaping and facilities in Settlers Hills - managed by a fireman!

Did you know that Stockland has a dedicated team responsible for maintaining the landscaping and features in your community for the first two years after it is established?  They then work closely with the City of Rockingham to hand over the management of landscaping, parks and facilities.

Stockland Communities website interviewed Ray Barnett, the Site Presentation Supervisor for all Stockland communities in WA and find out he?s been a bit of a hero behind the scenes...

What is your day job, Ray?
Managing the parks and reserves on our various estates and dealing with customer issues brought to my attention by our Customer Services Coordinator, Roxy.  I also provide input into the development of new projects.

What?s the best part about your job?
Giving input and providing ideas into new projects, as well as seeing new and exciting initiatives happen.  I also like being involved with communities such as the Settlers Common committee in Armadale to manage the Settlers Common reserve.

What?s your favourite Stockland estate and why?
Newhaven because of its more natural surroundings, long walkways, bridge crossings and seemingly never-ending parks.  There?s something different around every corner and it?s really well laid out.

Tell us about your volunteer firefighting
I?ve been with the Bedfordale Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade for almost 17 years, and before that was a volunteer in Deniliquin in NSW for 3 years.  I?ve attended around 1000 fires.  The worst one was at Pickering Brook about 4 years ago ? it was the hottest and the largest one I?ve been to.  Although the recent Armadale fires was the worst from the point of view of lost assets.  At Pickering Brook, I did get concerned for my own safety.  I was doing a controlled burn on one portion of the fire at the top of a hill and someone lit a fire at the bottom of the hill behind me.  I looked around to see fire everywhere - it was all smoke and no oxygen.  I had to run down the hill through fire; I probably had about 30 seconds to spare.

I?ve also been involved in education and raising awareness about bush fires through schools around bush fires.  We developed the KISS systems which is a community information service where you register your phone and receive messages about fires in the area or checking if you?ve activated your fire plan.

For his involvement in education, Ray and two other members have received medals of commendation from FESA ? the first in WA!

First WA Garage Sale Trail pictures

Settlers Hills was the site of the very first WA Garage Sale Trail as part of a larger national initiative.  Around 20 households in the Rockingham area took part as people came from far and wide to follow the trail and snap up some bargains.

Stockland Community Development Manager, Justine Colyer, set off early with her mother and dog in tow to distribute participant packs and returned to do another circuit to trawl through the bargains and take pictures of the participants.

There was a tense moment towards the end as she wrestled a large rocking chair which she?d picked up at the last sale into the car and found out there was almost no room for her mother and the dog.

Flick through the photos below to see your Garage Sale featured.

Some good suggestions came through about holding a swap meet site as well as sales at individual homes.  Let us know any other feedback on how we can make it even bigger and better next year.
