Artists apply the finishing touches to colourful murals at Stockland Rockhampton

Three talented artists have applied the finishing touches to a series of murals at Stockland Rockhampton, transforming the shopping centre with colourful and fun artworks inspired by the surrounding area and nature.

Over the month of March, artists Shannon Crees and Binx from northern New South Wales, and local Rockhampton artist Caitlin Broderick created the murals spanning the external walls and entry of the Terrace, as well as the dining and entertainment precinct.
The main mural, which is about 65 metres long and seven metres high, features some of Australia’s most cherished mammals and birdlife – kangaroos, a kookaburra and a budgerigar – as well as marine life and flowers united by abstract motifs. A playful mural along the internal wall of the Terrace features cheeky parrots dining.

Stockland Rockhampton Centre Manager, Elysia Billingham said Stockland is grateful to Shannon, Binx, and Caitlin for the thoughtful murals they have created together for the community.

“Our centre is more than just a place to shop – it is a place where people come to socialise with friends and family. The curated mural series reflects our approach to placemaking and desire to bring people together in a vibrant and interesting centre,” said Ms Billingham.

“The murals pay tribute to the local Rockhampton area and the natural environment, and we hope it will bring joy and inspiration to those who visit Stockland Rockhampton.”

Shannon Crees, an internationally recognised artist who led the creative collaboration said she loves how art can radically transform a space.
“I am passionate about creating art that uplifts and inspires local communities through my use of vibrant colour and pattern,” said Ms Crees.
“I had a vision of utilising the unique architecture of the building to create an outdoor exhibition on a grand scale. I used the recesses in the wall as frames for each individual artwork. I chose to cycle through colours to create a cohesive visual narrative that encourages viewers to discover each piece.”

The mural project at Rockhampton builds on successful mural projects with local artists at other Stockland shopping centres. The main mural at Stockland Rockhampton is the largest.
