Timing for commencement of work
Q: When did construction commence? (Answer)
A: The official Groundbreaking Ceremony took place on Monday 6 December 2010, with preliminary works commencing in the following days. Construction of the new Multi-Deck Car Park and bulk excavation of the site commenced in February 2011.
Q: Why was the Western Car Park closed? (Answer)
A: This car park was closed and demolished to create space to build the new multi-deck car park to provide more parking than ever before at the shopping centre, with improved access.
Q: Is there additional parking? (Answer)
A: We have built a temporary car park with 350 spaces behind the construction site which can be accessed off Benson Avenue. Whilst anyone is welcome to park here, the car park is designed to accommodate centre staff and construction workers vehicles to keep the convenient spaces close to the centre's entrance free for customers.
Q: Which shops are closing and when? (Answer)
A:
Some retailers within the centre may close as part of the redevelopment works. Signage will be in place within the centre to communicate these changes to all customers.
A: The redevelopment is being delivered in phases to ensure that our customers can continue to shop at their favourite shops. It will be business as usual and customers will be able to enjoy all the variety that Stockland Shellharbour currently has on offer.
Q: When will Myer be open for trade? (Answer)
A: Myer is scheduled to open in late 2013.
Q: When will the new Coles and Kmart be open for trade? (Answer)
A: Coles and Kmart are scheduled to open their new stores in mid 2012. They will continue to trade in their current location until the new stores open.
Q: When will the new Woolworths be open for trade? (Answer)
A: Woolworths is scheduled to open their new store in early 2013.
Q: When will the new car park be open? (Answer)
A: The first levels of the Western Multi-Deck Car Park are on schedule to be completed by the end of 2011, providing much more parking at Stockland Shellharbour than ever before.
Environment
Q: What environmental initiatives have been implemented in the redevelopment? (Answer)
A:
Stockland Shellharbour will deliver the largest application of solar energy to date for a shopping centre in Australia. The centre, which will aim to achieve the first 4 Star Green Star shopping centre Design and As Built rating in the Illawarra, will include more than 7,000m2 of solar panels on the roof supplemented by a tri-generation energy system.
This combination of solar and tri-generation will provide energy for 70 per cent of the new common area of the development. Initiatives include:
- Energy sub-metering
- Energy efficient lighting design
- 'Smart' water meters for efficient management
- Updated green tenancy fit-out guide
- 7,000m2 of solar panels
- Tri - generation energy system
Q: How much material has been excavated from the site? (Answer)
A: In the first six months of the project, over 128,000 cubic metres of material has been removed from the development site with 99 per cent of the waste materials recycled.

Q: What strategy is in place to manage the reduced parking whilst the new Multi-Deck Car Park is under construction? (Answer)
A:
Signage will be installed to direct traffic to the existing Multi-Deck Car Park and Roof Car Park.
To ensure the centre remains accessible and a safe environment we are putting in place many initiatives including additional traffic management around the centre as well as providing staff parking to free up parking closest to entries for customers.
A: temporary "Overflow Car Park" is now open and accessible off Benson Avenue. Whilst retailers, staff of the centre and construction workers are being encouraged to park here to keep the spaces closer to the centre's entry doors free for customers, anyone is welcome to park here.
Q: Is there additional parking? (Answer)
A: More Parents with Prams parking spots have been allocated in the parking area near the entrance closest to Coffee Guru and NRMA.
Q: Have additional measures been put in place for pedestrian access? (Answer)
A:
Yes, a new pedestrian path has been built to connect the Stockland Shellharbour car park near Coffee Guru and the NRMA to Holm Place.
A: An additional pedestrian crossing has been installed near Hands On Car Wash and the entrance to Cove Lane, leading up to the centre towards Target.
Q: Will there be changes to the Bus Stop and Taxi Rank during construction? (Answer)
A: No, the Bus Stop and Taxi Rank located near Coffee Guru will remain operational throughout the redevelopment.
Q: How many new jobs will be created during construction and when the centre opens? (Answer)
A:
The redevelopment of the centre is a significant investment in the future of the Illawarra Region and will create local jobs for local people. The construction of the new Stockland Shellharbour will employ more than 1,000 people, with flow-on effects to the wider community. Youth employment will form a significant component of this workforce, through a program being undertaken with Brookfield Multiplex and The Salvation Army Employment Plus.
Currently Stockland Shellharbour provides approximately 600 jobs, with an estimated 600 new jobs being created within the centre upon opening.
