Summer is upon us and it’s the perfect time of year to get outdoors, pack a picnic and let the kids run wild in nature.

We’ve compiled our guide of the community’s best parks and recreation spaces, ideal for a neighbourhood catch-up, getting the kids active or to beat the heat and cool down on a hot summer’s day.

Darlington Parklands (Cnr Yarrabilba Drive and Darlington Drive)

Ready to make a splash?! Darlington Parklands features a large water play area with shallow pools, foundations and streams. The perfect destination for community connection, play or relaxation, let the kids use their imaginations to explore the climbing dome with multi-swing, fort and climbing walls as well as a 30-metre twin flying fox.

For those wanting to get active, why not make use of the park’s outdoor gym which is situated alongside a half-court basketball court, bike and pedestrian paths and a huge multi-purpose oval for running or kicking a ball around.

Shelters, toilets and barbecues are onsite for families to enjoy all year round.

Shaw Street Ovals (Shaw Street)

The Shaw Street Ovals offers a large open space to stretch the legs and enjoy a game of footy with friends. Home of sport in Yarrabilba, the ovals now feature rugby, soccer, AFL and cricket, while the hard courts are being used for netball and tennis.

Shaw Street Ovals are also home to a community garden, a Sports and Community Hub and dog park. The ovals play host to major community events, including the Carols in the Parkland.

Buxton Park (Cnr Buxton Avenue and Windsor Avenue)

Run, jump and scale to new heights at the popular Buxton Park, perfect for all ages and interests.

This exciting play space features a playground with built-in trampolines, swings, wavy caterpillar-like feature for children to run, climb and play on, and a high tower for bigger kids to tackle.

At the centre of the park is a grassy amphitheatre that plays host to a range of community events. Why not lace up your walking shoes and get active with kilometres of walking and cycle paths that wind through the woodland reserves and around the large wetland.

Along the paths are shelters to relax and enjoy the natural environment. This is also the perfect spot to take your four-legged friend with a dog park, featuring separate areas for large and small dogs.

Jinnung Jalli Native Trail (Gossan Circuit)

Jinnung Jalli means ‘walking around through the trees’ in the language of the traditional custodians of Yarrabilba, the Yugambeh people. Jinnung Jalli is a unique park that aims to educate visitors through an interpretive native plant trail. There is also a kick-about space, picnic shelters and a water bubbler.

This trail meanders through the linear space with signage providing information on the plant species native to Yarrabilba and the region, and explains how the traditional custodians used these plants.

Daybreak Park (Cnr daybreak Street and Highlands Street)

Nestled in nature, Daybreak Park is a great local destination to get active in. Located on Daybreak and Highlands Street, Daybreak Park features a kick-about lawn area, barbecue and large shelter for picnics. The kids will also love exploring the echidna playground. There’s also an outdoor gym with connections to the pedestrian network.

Greenstone Park (Cnr Greenstone Street and Darnell Street)

After an adventure playground for the kids to burn off some steam? Then check out Greenstone Park! Perched atop a hill opposite Yarrabilba State School, this is the perfect spot to have a picnic or kick a ball around. There’s also climbing boxes and a 3m high slide. Enjoy shaded seating under tall eucalypts or cycle the winding paths.

Sandstone Park (Slate Street)

With wide open paths and running track markers, Sandstone Ridge is a wonderful neighbourhood park with expansive views over Yarrabilba. The fully-fenced playground and picnic shelters means you can relax, catching-up with friends or neighbours while the kids play. The park also boasts tranquil areas of natural bushland, perfect for kids to explore.

Neumann Park (Dryander Street)

Neumann Park is the newest park to open in Yarrabilba, offering a nature-based playground and nearby rock shelters that demonstrate a direct link to the past and traditional owners.

The park has been designed to encourage children to actively play within the natural surroundings and is focused on movement between spaces and levels, discovery and learning.

A big drawcard for Yarrabilba children and parents, it’s the perfect destination for coffee catch-ups with friends and neighbours, and a great new regional destination within the Plunkett Conservation Park for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

Plunkett Conservation Park and Wickham Peak (Quinzeh Creek Road, Logan Village)

Yarrabilba adjoins the beautiful Plunkett Conservation Park offering opportunities for nature-lovers to enjoy hiking, horse riding and mountain bike riding. A network of trails traverses the forest so you can explore the open Eucalypt Forest and catch stunning views from the sandstone outcrops.

Ensure you make your way up to Wickham Peak to catch an impressive view of Yarrabilba with views north to Brisbane. In late winter to early spring, spectacular wildflower displays sprinkle colour throughout the forest. Walking along the trails, you can catch sight of koalas, swamp wallabies, eastern grey kangaroos, and gliders. The park is dog-friendly but has some steep inclines so make sure you take plenty of water and sun protection.
