For retirees Jacqui and Paolo Tardelli, the benefits of moving to Ashfield’s Cardinal Freeman village can be summed up by the word “more” – more physical activity, more social life, more exercise and vastly more getting out and about to restaurants, cafes and shops, both in the city and around Sydney’s inner west.

The Tardellis moved to Cardinal Freeman six months ago from Sydney’s north-west, finding the moving process a little taxing but relieved to be leaving behind a particularly large garden which Jacqui says had become “just too much” for her husband Paolo to maintain.

“We chose Cardinal Freeman because it was far and away the best of the several villages we visited and inspected, and because of its location and excellent public transport links,” Jacqui says.

There was nothing to do around our home in North Rocks that was within walking distance, and no public transport close by. To go anywhere you had to drive, which meant not being able to go out of an evening for a meal and a glass of wine together for instance, so we just tended to stay at home most of the time - and we also began to realise how isolated we’d be when older and no longer able to drive.

“Here, with all the bus and train services so close by, we are able to go into the city just for lunch, I can catch the train to Parramatta when I need to go there, and there are also many cafes and shops within easy walking distance.”

While Paolo has taken to playing table tennis in Cardinal Freeman’s community centre, Jacqui now attends the village’s exercise classes and swims regularly in its heated indoor swimming pool – both activities, she says with a laugh, she “definitely didn’t do” before moving.

“The great thing about living here is that you can participate in village activities and social gatherings as much or as little as you want to,” she explains.

“For now, Paolo and I are happy spending a lot of time doing things together, but we know that one day one of us will be left on their own, and it’s very comforting to think there will be so much company here and so many activities to enjoy.”

“We’ve made many new friends and met so many really lovely people.”
