When Sue and Leo Kane decided to move from their family home in Wareemba, between Five Dock and Abbotsford, the standard apartments they first inspected left the couple fearing they would end up isolated and lonely.

The thought of buying an apartment in a purpose-built retirement village had, at that time however, never crossed their minds.

“When a friend asked if we’d considered moving into a retirement village, my immediate reaction was ‘Oh God, no!’,” Sue recounts. “For some reason I’d always assumed retirement villages were for other people, not me.”

When she and Leo did eventually visit a nearby village, Sue says they found it to be “more pleasant than we’d expected”, but still not particularly impressive.

And then they visited Ashfield’s Cardinal Freeman retirement village.

“Everything about Cardinal Freeman is just so fabulous and modern and luxurious, with far more facilities and amenities than we could ever have imagined,” Sue enthuses. Visiting for the first time on a Monday, by Wednesday they’d purchased an apartment off the plan and then, last October, moved in, accompanied by their beloved King Charles spaniel, Poppy.

The Kanes’ reaction is not an uncommon one, given Cardinal Freeman sets a new benchmark in quality retirement living, not just in Sydney’s inner west but nationally. With its heated indoor pool and gym, café, bar, cinema, piano lounge, library and billiards room, Cardinal Freeman has won prestigious awards for excellence in retirement living in both the Urban Development Institute of Australia and the Urban Taskforce.

For their part, Sue says she and Leo are now far more fit and active than previously, regularly visiting the swimming pool, taking Poppy for walks around the village’s landscaped gardens and participating in weekly Line Dancing sessions.

“Everybody here is so warm and welcoming, and we have made many new friends”
