As research on the issue clearly demonstrates, loneliness and isolation are social problems that not only disproportionately affect older Australians, but worsen with each passing decade.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that while around 24% of the population lives alone, this increases to 30% for people over the age of 75 and 35% for those aged 85 and over.
Yet as the social research organisation points out, it’s vital to ensure that, while Australians are living longer, we are given every opportunity to enjoy not just quantity but also quality of life.
And one of the biggest factors determining quality of life is continuing connection with others; living within a close-knit community of friendly, caring and like-minded people.
That’s undoubtedly one major reason why more and more seniors are choosing to downsize from ‘empty nest’ family homes and move to a retirement village – because the best thing by far about any village is that it is a community.
At Ashfield’s Cardinal Freeman retirement village, residents constantly report their social lives have expanded enormously since moving in, in large part because of the great variety of social and community activities on offer.
“If you live in an ordinary block of units, other residents are likely to be at work or busy with children,” resident Toni Boulton says. “Here however, the residents all have so much in common with each other and more time, which they’re happy to spend with others.”
“People here come from so many interesting backgrounds, and it’s been wonderful sharing stories and getting to know them. As for the social life and opportunities to make friends here, sometimes it gets too busy! We love meeting up with other residents on weekend afternoons in the bar area, and you can invite friends and family along and they are made to feel very welcome too.”
