Having worked at Donvale Retirement Village for the last 4 years as Lifestyle & Wellbeing Coordinator Jane Bensch is passionate about her job and the opportunity it gives her to enhance the lifestyle of the residents within a community atmosphere.
A career nurse for 40 years, Jane thought at 50 it was time for change and decided that a Retirement Village environment was right for her. “It’s not aged care, it’s about being active” says Jane on the big difference between the two.

We asked Jane; What sort of things does a Stockland Lifestyle & Wellbeing Coordinator do? And she nearly wore us out with all the activities. From running the Village Social Calendar to help organise the social club, including; collection of monies for outings and functions; engagement of entertainers and caterers; financial management of social club funds. Jane also produces the  monthly ‘Village Voice’ newsletter.

“Many activities have been introduced since I started. I think the most successful is our annual Village Fete. We get such a huge crowd and everyone has a great day.” Other regular activities include trivia nights, scrabble, rummy-cub and mahjong groups.

For Jane, the most important tip for retirement is to stay active; “We go by the mantra of  ‘If you don’t use it, you lose it.”  Jane ensures that Donvale has a range of exercise programs, and all are very well attended.

With all the things going on at Donvale, we asked Jane what was her favourite? “ For me, I think my favourite activity is the monthly Dinner Dances. I always stay and join in the dancing. It’s such a wonderful way to spend time with the residents.”
