Gillin Park Retirement Village recently celebrated its 25th birthday, with residents and dignitaries alike gathered for the party.
Village Manager Narelle Cook and Stockland General Manager of Operations Igor Merkin, were proud to host former Warrnambool Mayor, David Atkinson and former Victorian Premier Dr Denis Napthine for the event.
However, when it came to the cake cutting the biggest celebrity of the day was one of Gillin Park’s original residents Mrs Joyce Hobley.
Like many retirees, Joyce was considering where she wanted to spend her retirement. After much deliberation she choose the then-new Gillin Park development, and says she has not looked back since. At 96, Joyce is still a major fixture on the village social scene and she shared her stories and memories over the last 25 years living in the village.
One of the benefits of Gillin Park Retirement Village is being able to age in place. When residents decide that they want a little extra help but are not ready for aged care, they can move from an independent villa to a serviced apartment and still be a part of village life. Joyce made the move and spoke fondly of still being able to stay in her home and the importance of not moving away from her community. When asked what the best thing about living at Gillin Park was, Joyce replied, “ The company of other residents, I am never lonely.”
A great day was had by all, with cake and champagne to toast to the last 25 years. Congratulations Gillin Park, here’s to 25 more.
