Behind each of your favourite stores are passionate, hardworking people who welcome you to take part in their story, every time you walk in. Here, we introduce you to the faces behind some of your favourite Stockland retailers. Learn about the history of their business, the products and services they offer and what they love about their local community.
Meet John, Healthfood Central
1. What services/products do you offer?
We have a fantastic variety of health related products, from supplements and skin care products to grains and flours, nuts and seeds, and extremely well priced certified organic fruit and vegetables. Our staff are very educated and full of experience to help our customers with any health concerns they may have. We have many naturopaths and nutritionists on staff so you can be assured of the correct advice. It also helps that they are extremely friendly and happy to go the extra mile to help out.
2. What feedback do you get from customers?
We often have comments regarding the broad range of products that we have. It's definitely an eclectic mix that many health food stores just don't have. Being on the Gold Coast, we have quite a few tourists come in and a common thread is that they wish they had a store like ours near their home. It's always nice to hear. We also have many comments about our very well priced organic fruit and veg. We have really set this up as a customer service rather than a money making part of the store and the customers appreciate it.
3 What do you love about our local Burleigh community?
We are very lucky when it comes to the quality of customers who come in. I believe that my core customer is a more educated, discerning person than the average joe/jill out there. They have, more often than not, done lots of research about health and are generally on a path to a healthy lifestyle. Consequently, they are generally happy and a delight to deal with. We often end up in deep, quality conversations that we both learn from in the end. It's lovely.
4. What makes a great health food store?
I think it's really simple. You need to listen to the customer and provide them with what they want and need. When we opened a few years back, we only stocked the store to around 80% of capacity, and the rest was dictated by what the locals wanted over the following months. A good health food store is one that caters to their local community. Another thing is to not compromise on the quality of products in the store. We make sure all products have quality ingredients with nothing harmful in them. Our customers can be reassured that we have looked at every product before it gets the go ahead to be stocked on shelf.
5. What trends are you seeing in health food?
Certainly over the last few months, a focus on immune building and people wanting to stay healthy and sanitised. It's been nice to see a whole bunch of new customers who are now prioritising their health in a new way. I'm sure this will stick for many of them into the future. Taking COVID out of the picture, I've seen a definite trend in people opting for a more plant based diet with an increase in the demand and availability of vegan products in the market. There's also a fair bit of research and demand for 'anti ageing' products. It's a very interesting field right now.
6. How have you coped with COVID 19 and what are you looking forward to?
Thankfully, we have been allowed to trade all the way through this crisis. A lot of people see us as 'essential' and it would seem a little wrong to close a health food store in a health pandemic. Our staff have been great, and have been cleaning constantly and educating people on ways to boost their immunity and stay well. I'm looking forward to all stores in the centre reopening and our world returning to some sort of normalcy again. I'm sure we'll all be a little bit more focussed on staying well into the future. Oh, and I'm looking forward to watching some AFL again.
