Meet Violet, King of Knives


1. Tell us about your store?

The Cairns King of Knives franchise is 25 years old this year! I have been with King of Knives since it opened in Cairns in 1995. I was manager back then and bought the franchise in 2010. I have been on the floor selling to customers the whole time. If you add that up it's over 6000 days helping the Cairns community with quality knives, outdoor necessities and kitchen accessories.

 

2. What feedback do you get from your customers?

'Oh, you're not just a knife store!' & 'Wow, you're service was fantastic! Being a small local business we intend on being around for the long haul as we have proven with over a 25 years in Cairns. Quality service and support is our biggest strength.

 

3. Do you have a funny story to tell?

We offer a knife sharpening service. Customers can drop their blunt knives into the store on Thursday and pick them up on Saturday when they have been sharpened. One day I was conducting interviews for a position at King of Knives and was waiting for a lady named 'Lyn' to arrive for her interview. When Lyn arrived I asked her to come for a walk to sit down and have a chat (about the staff position). After finding a place to sit I started asking her questions about her knife and kitchen knowledge. After answering a few of them she stopped me and asked 'are all these questions necessary just to pick up my knives that you sharpened'!! Her name was Lyn too!  😰

 

4. Why do you think shopping centres are important?

The personal service and the need to touch and feel the quality of a product. This is especially true for our knives. Many customers have their eye on a particular brand or style of knife. Maybe because they saw a TV chef use one or their friends told them it was a must have. When they come to visit us we let them hold the knife in their hand so they can gauge whether the weight and grip is right for them. Also the personal service is paramount. Weight and grip is one thing but then also the shape and size of knives is important. For example, women generally lean towards a short knife while men prefer larger knives. The Santoku knife for women is all the rage right now.

 

5. With regards to your store type, what are customers wanting right now?

Pots and pans and pasta machines. We can't keep believe the demand! Luckily we have a huge selection to choose from. Including cast iron pans and woks, electric pasta machines and ones that make ravioli.

 

6. What's three words that describe your store?

Unique, fascinating, surprising
