Five of the best winter day trips to take from Hervey Bay

Category: community

Hervey Bay is no stranger to natural beauty, and winter is a beautiful time of year to get outdoors and amongst all the natural beauty around us. After all, we live in Queensland! So why not embrace our beautiful winter weather and check out our ultimate guide to winter day trips. We’ve done the heavy lifting for you and detailed where to go, what to pack, and what to wear before you venture out on your adventure.

Where to go

Be amongst gentle giants while whale watching at Fraser Coast

Can you call yourself a true Hervey Bay local if you haven’t gone whale watching? In the whale watching capital, may we add. At Hervey Bay’s Fraser Coast, not only will you experience its quiet charm and raw nature, you’ll witness migratory humpback whales playfully salute their flippers in these calm waters from July to October every year. What’s even better is that you can pack your own picnic lunch to bring on the boat – you’ll be nibbling on brie and crackers while these gentle giants swim right past you!

Walk through the historic streets of Maryborough

If your kids grew up watching Mary Poppins, their childhood memories will come flooding back as they wander the historic streets of Maryborough. As the birthplace of author P.L. Travers, this small town with classic 1800s Queensland architecture was the inspiration behind her book series, Mary Poppins. Explore the art galleries and museums here that have as much quirk and character as the book itself, before setting up your picnic at the beautiful Queen’s Park botanic gardens and enjoying a lunch in the sun. In the words of Mary Poppins herself, “Why do you always complicate things that are really quite simple?”. And a stroll through this colonial Queensland town and a picnic in the sun is just that – heart-warming and simple.

Take a walk on the wild side at Mount Walsh Falls

A pleasant place to picnic, cool off in the shade beside the rock pools, or simply take in all of the lush nature, Mount Walsh Falls is the perfect spot for families who love a good swimming spot, and a picnic after! This prominent landmark not only makes for a picturesque day trip, but it’s also a favourite spot for bushwalking and camping – ideal for when you want to add a few more days onto that day trip. Just be sure to pack all your road trip essentials because there are few amenities in the park.

Hide away in a hinterland haven

Get out and explore the unbeaten path with several hidden gems found deep within the Fraser Coast hinterland. Whether you’re looking to be amongst scenic bushland, quaint towns, tranquil picnic spots, or even a bit of fishing and kayaking, the Fraser Coast hinterland is an absolute must for a Hervey Bay day trip. Don’t forget to pop into the quaint town of Tiaro to taste some old-fashioned pub fare, while you’re at it.

Visit the world’s largest sand island

It may be a no-brainer, but the wondrous natural beauty and appeal of World-Heritage listed Fraser Island, cannot go unmentioned. This natural paradise is the world’s largest sand island (yep, we said the world’s largest), offering endless white sandy beaches, freshwater lakes, and tropical rainforests. Take in all the sights in an action-packed day trip from Hervey Bay, and you can get there by flight, a scenic ferry ride, or jet ski. With a subtropical climate and warm waters year-round, there’s no better time to visit the island than winter, because it’s also whale season – meaning the trip over is as scenic as the destination!

What to bring

Five of the best winter day trips in Hervey Bay

While winter in Australia still means blue skies and warm sunshine, don’t underestimate those chilly temps! Especially if you’re picnicking by the river or out in the countryside. Thankfully, Stockland Hervey Bay has all your picnic essentials to keep you warm and your stomach full.

With so many day trip destinations to cover, you’re completely spoilt for choice when it comes to locating the perfect picnic spot. Which is why having a sturdy (but still cute) picnic blanket is key! Pick up a classic tartan mat from Kmart and mini picnic table from Robins Kitchen. And no picnic would be complete without a rattan picnic set from Kmart, which includes four individual sets of plates, bowls, mugs, and cutlery.

After you’ve explored every nook and cranny of your day trip location, start serving up those picnic snacks in style with a wooden serving board from Kmart – perfect for holding everything from cheese and crackers, to fruits and chocolate. And at the end of your adventure-filled day, cheers to each other with some picnic-safe, plastic glasses from Coles.

What to wear

You’ve got your day trip all planned out, packed the car with the essentials, and you’re about to set off – exciting! But what to wear? Dressing for a winter day trip can be a little trickier than the warmer months, but not to worry – there’s a simple rule you can follow to make sure you’re not only feeling confident but also warm and cosy. It’s called the rule of three.

Step one:

Your first step is to think about your trip. Is it to visit the galleries and museums of Maryborough? Perhaps, a day trip on the water? This will determine your choice of outfit (and often most importantly, footwear).

Step two:

The second step is to opt for layers. We love the versatility of the essential midi-dress from Cotton On, layered with a chic cable cardigan from Sussan – trending this season – and a fedora. Perfect for the galleries. Looking for a more practical look that doesn’t compromise on style? A lightweight, long-sleeve top tucked into the corduroy pant from Ally Fashion, is a fantastic way to bring an element of interest to your outfit. Finish with a crossbody bag and some modern sunglasses (always necessary in Queensland), and you’re set. Ideal for a day on the water!

Step three:

The final step is to consider your footwear. Did you know you lose a lot of your body heat through your feet? Fashion aside, this is why it’s important to choose appropriate footwear when putting together a winter day trip look. A boot with a small wedge heel is ideal for trips to a nearby vineyard, botanical gardens, museums and galleries, and the like. While a fresh white sneaker is a brilliant choice for boating. Or, if you know it’s going to be a warm one and are heading out for some site-seeing or a picnic, you can still get away with a strappy sandal here in the sunshine state. Just keep those layers at the ready in case the temps drop.
