Lift-off into space blog

Maybe it’s Baby Yoda, or SpaceX (or Boba Fett), but lately it seems like there’s never been a better time to explore the universe around us. So, this month Stockland Hervey Bay is taking you and the kids one-step closer to the stars with our line-up of interactive, intergalactic activities throughout the centre.

To help celebrate and get everyone into the right head-space – we’ve rounded up the very best in fashion and toys this side of the Milky Way.

What’s more? We’re bringing the fun home with our easy DIY Craft Solar System – the perfect entertainment for rainy days at home with the whole family.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get ready for lift-off…

From graphic tees and snuggly pjs, to boots ready to walk on the moon and the perfect book week costume – space’s best threads are all here at Stockland Hervey Bay.

Now, onto the fun stuff!
On cool autumn days, there’s nothing better than getting crafty from the comfort of your own coffee table. One of our favourite DIY projects at the moment (it might be all the stars in our eyes) is an easy foam solar system. The best bit? It’s full of sneaky, teachable moments…

First up, you’ll need…
• Aluminium foil
• Glitter stars
• Acrylic paints
• Paintbrushes
• Bamboo skewers
• 9 x foam balls (of varying sizes)
• 1 x foam cube or sheet
• A colour print-out of the solar system
• A plastic or paper sheet

Once you’ve got all the above items, it’s time to get creative!

Step one
Start by looking at the print-out of the Solar System – then work out which balls will work to represent each planet (size-wise).

Step two
Now, it’s time to get artsy! Use the paints and paint brushes to paint your foam square or sheet black, then sprinkle with glitter stars and place on your plastic or paper sheet to dry.

Step three
Next, paint each foam ball in the colours of each of the planets and the sun and place on your plastic or paper sheet to dry as you go.

For Mercury – you can cover a small ball in your silver aluminium foil to really give it some wow effect!

Step four
Once dry, pop a skewer into the base of each of your planets and Sun.

Step five
When you’re ready, have a look at your print-out again and insert each skewered ball into the black foam cube or sheet in the correct order to imitate the solar system in real life.

Voila! You’re done and ready for blast-off!
