The top streetwear trends of 2021

Category: fashion and beauty

What does streetwear look like in 2021? These are the top trends that you’ll find at your local Stockland centre.

The streetwear scene is serving some fresh looks in 2021 and we’ve hand-picked some of the top trends to edge up your wardrobe. From the streets to the runway and now into your favourite fashion stores at your local Stockland Merrylands, we’re seeing a resurgence of oversized/baggy looks, utility-inspired pieces, and tactile fabrics like Sherpa and fleece coming through this season. And with the help of local fashion icon and creative, Bianca Beers, who shares her favourite streetwear finds, you’ll be nailing this style in no time.

Baggy is back

Colette By Colette Hayman Monogram Abby Bumbag $29.99, Cotton On Max Combat Platform Mini Gusset Boot $69.99, Decjuba Drew Denim Short Puffer $169.95, Decjuba Naomi Slouch Jean $109.95, Decjuba New York Boucle Hoodie $79.95, Jay Jays Cuffed Beanie $10, Forever New Polly Chain Hoop Earring $14.99, JD Sports Nike Air Force 1 Shadow Womens Sneaker $180, Platypus Shoes Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Lift High Top Sneaker $130, Sportsgirl Rewind Sweat Dress $59.95, Sportsgirl Sandwash Sweat Pant $49.95, Sportsgirl Campaign Image

Perhaps off the back of the loose-fitted loungewear trend of 2020, baggy retro pieces are having a moment this year and, like cool girl Bianca Beers, we’re loving this throwback addition to our wardrobes. Sorry, skinny jeans.

“I love that baggy/oversized is back. I'm so about it,” Bianca says.

With foundations in large tees, hoodies, and pants with loose relaxed silhouettes, our favourite way to style this particular trend is by pairing an oversized band tee with tapered mum jeans, old-school converse or retro sneakers, and a cap or beanie – perfect for that undone, edgy look.

Big W Tradie Men's Lace Up Boot $49, Connor Brendan Puffer Vest $79.99, Connor Military Flintoff Jacket $89.99, Connor Military Limitless Cuffed Cargo Pant $69.99, Cotton On Beckley Sunglasses $14.99, Cotton On Performance Active Sock $12.99, Foot Locker Nike Crater Men’s Shoe $150, Rebel Adidas French Terry Camouflage Short $49.99, Rebel Adidas Trio Training Jersey $59.99, Rebel Nike Utility Speed Backpack $84.99, Stateside Sports Brooklyn Nets Beanie $40, Target Campaign Image

Function and fashion combine in utilitywear and considering it seems to feature front-and-centre in fashion reports year after year, it’s safe to say this trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Though, this season we’ve seen a bit of a ‘rewilding’ take on the existing trend, in a sort of hiking meets high fashion way. It’s no surprise streetwear fashion icons and creatives like Bianca Beers can’t get enough of it.

“I'm obsessed with the whole utility vibe – utility vests, chains, harnesses, hidden pockets, oversized pockets, chunky boots, and OTT accessorising. Fun and functional!” Bianca says.

When shopping this trend at your local Stockland Merrylands, look for pieces like combat boots, tailored canvas shirts, puffer jackets/vests, and cargo pants. Some classic wayfarer sunglasses and utility backpacks make for great accessories.

Keep it cosy

Cotton On Rex Stud Closed Toe Mule $44.99, Decjuba Mia Shearling Jacket $139.95, Decjuba Savannah PU Mini Skirt $79.95, Decjuba Shearling Bucket Hat $29.95, Forever New Arianna V-Neck Poncho $69.99, Forever New Bella Borg Coat $169.99, Forever New Phoebe Loungewear Pocket Knit Jogger $89.99, Hype DC New Balance 327 Women's Trainer $149.99, Sportsgirl Cord 90's Shoulder Bag $29.95, Sportsgirl Lily Check Scarf $29.95, JD Sports Campaign Image

From shackets to shearling bucket hats and joggers to V-neck knits, there’s no denying the comfort of streetwear. Taking you from the sofa to the streets has never been easier with this trend – and there’s a certain comfortability in knowing that if you intend on a Netflix binge but get asked to go out for a last-minute lunch at Stockland Merrylands with your mates, you can roll off the couch and into the car in style. Texture is key here, so lean into this trend by reaching for touchy-feely fabrics like Sherpa, corduroy, fleece, and shearling. Tie your look together with a fresh pair of sneakers or slides and a 90s shoulder bag (again, loving the throwbacks), and you’re set!
