Award Finalists

Finalists for the Wyndham Business Awards were recently announced. We at Stockland Point Cook were proud to see several of our retailers be named as finalists, including Gracie’s Boutique. We caught up with the store owner, Kerrie: What inspired you to go into business? I’ve been self-employed for a long time & I’ve always (wanted) to do my own venture. I’ve always had this idea that Gracie, who is my oldest daughter who’s on the autism spectrum, would need somewhere to learn how to work, to get more experience to get a job herself. Or perhaps have somewhere that she could work with me. Originally it started with Made it by Gracie cards, we started online & expanded that. Her name is on the door to include her ownership. I live around the corner. I feel like I know lots of Point Cook people & I knew what I felt was missing in Point Cook, hence the collection that we put together in the store. What area of the business are you most proud of? I’m most proud of the team & the customer service that they provide. How much enjoyment we have working together. As much as it’s great that we have lots of suppliers in the community & have a real community involvement in the ownership, at the end of the day that’s only come about because of the team. That wouldn’t have happened unless we had the right people. I think that it’s changed the climate of the store, right from the beginning, it’s given it the feel that it’s got. Money & training can’t buy that. It’s just good people who love what they do. They’re genuine, honest, they operate as if they have shares in the store. They care, they go the extra mile. They don’t just care about me & the business, they care about the people who come in. What does this nomination mean to you? It’s always nice to have recognition but what I’ve found really interesting is the connections that have already come from it. Meeting other people in business & discovering people that we can collaborate with at different levels & people discovering us. That’s made a huge difference. We’ve all really enjoyed being recognised for what we’re doing. The girls were really excited when I told them we’d been selected as a finalist. What do you want Gracie’s to be famous for? I want (customers) to keep coming back because they enjoy coming in. That they feel like they’ve had a great experience. Whether they’ve bought something for $2 or they’ve bought something that’s going to be on their wall forever, wear for years or the best present they’ve ever bought, I want them to have that experience. Because we put new things in all the time, I just want them to keep coming & keep looking, seeing something new & interesting. If we keep the customer service there & keep it interesting, they’ll keep coming back.

Award Finalists

Finalists for the Wyndham Business Awards were recently announced. We at Stockland Point Cook were proud to see several of our retailers be named as finalists. We sat down with Balkrishnan (Bali) & his wife Anupam from Priya Indian Restaurany, who have owned the business for 9 years. What inspired you to go into the food industry? Bali: I’d been trained & working as a mechanical engineer & came here on a skilled migration in the 90s. Australia was in recession that time & then I retrained in hospitality, working for big companies. My interest developed in Asian cooking, particularly Indian cooking. My goal was to create that upmarket, fine dining restaurant & that dream has come true. Anupam: We have our small restaurant in Sydenham, that’s the first restaurant, we opened it in 2004. There was a sign up Priya Indian Restaurant opening soon. We were driving past & we thought ok this is a good place to have a restaurant, so whoever is opening here they’re going to be very successful. I said ok, don’t worry, whoever is opening, is opening for us. It was a joke. After 1 year that restaurant came up for sale & (we) went there & bought the place, so that’s how Priya came around (to) us. We opened the doors & in 2 years we were doing really well. (Bali) was in the kitchen, his recipes & everything was going well. And I was front of house, that’s how we started. Bali: This is the 2nd time we’ve been nominated, (for the Wyndam Business Awards) we won last year. Honestly, we never, ever enter any awards. My daughter last year said, why don’t you do something so more people know about it, go for award sort of thing. I said the people know. When we entered we realised we were ignoring a very important corner of the business. It was a very good for the staff working there, they get the recognition. This award is not for us only, it’s for the team. What are you most proud of with Priya? Bali: I cannot put my finger on only 1 area. My main area I’m proud of is the consistency of food, we maintain it. The reason is because I’m a chef also, so whoever comes to work or cook, they have to follow the same recipes. That is the key. You will find the same flavour is going on (whenever you come). Anupam: When we open the doors, good food is always the key but to keep it consistent is the hardest thing to do & we realise at the same time that this is the first key to run a successful business. The second thing is the service. Once you enter Priya’s door, you won’t go unhappy. We try our best so that when you leave you have a smile on your face & a full tummy. Bali: it doesn’t come randomly, we invest in skilled workers, that’s very important. We don’t take short cuts with the quality of food & the staff training. What does this nomination mean to you? Anupam: It’s a big recognition for us. It brings us promotion. Puts people’s trust in the restaurant. When you are doing hard work, you have to put yourself out there to show what you’re doing. There are customers, they were married when they first came, then they had the baby & she started eating & her favourite was the coconut crab. That’s the kid you need, who goes for expensive food. And I remember as a baby, she was sitting there & with her two fingers she’s trying to pick at the food, eating & now she’s using the knife & fork. Now she has a little brother & she’s trying to teach him how to eat the coconut crab. So that’s the journey we have gone through, she knows the whole restaurant. Her mum said you have to have some boy for her who can cook Indian food. When people think of Priya, what do you want them to think of?: Anupam: It’s like a second home. Bali: First thing that comes in their mind is we want to go to Priya for food. Anupam: We are very proud of our service, so when the customers come in the restaurant they know how we serve them. Bali: A lot of parents are coming to see their families (in the area), people come they say Bali, my mum & dad are here from the UK, from London & they say the best curry comes from there & I say, you come over here, we’ll show you where the best curry is. Anupam: I’ll tell you the name, Priya’s name, what it means. My daughter, last week she went to a night club & over there some guys were sitting there & from there they look at her & go Oh, Priya, butter chicken & she goes I’m not Priya & I’m not butter chicken. Because they come here & straightaway their mind goes to food. So that’s the brand awareness out there for us. What does Priya actually mean? Priya is a very common name for a girl in India. It means your beloved or a girlfriend, this is my darling. So when the first restaurant was opened, (the original owner) had only one daughter & her name was Priya, so he named it after her. When he sold the restaurant to us, the girl comes up to Bali & says are you going to change the name of this restaurant? With the big googly eyes. Bali thinks for a minute & he says no. That’s why we never changed the name & we kept the same name & it made her happy as well. But it’s very lucky for us. So that little girl, she was very lucky for us.

Award Finalists

Finalists for the Wyndham Business Awards were recently announced. We at Stockland Point Cook were proud to see several of our retailers be named as finalists. We sat down with Duncan from Mail Boxes Etc, who has owned the business for 5 years & found out more about what makes his business stand out. As you know growth equals survival so the fact that we are here five years later shows that we have been successful in what we have been doing. What inspired you to go into business? So I worked in the corporate world for about 20 years in a business development role. I thought if I could be doing this for a corporate, developing business for them why can’t I do something like that for myself & my family. So that was the first motivation & then from there it was about providing job opportunities. I’m particularly passionate about providing employment opportunities for the younger generation, so all of our staff are in their twenties or early thirties. I’m genuinely passionate about creating as many employment opportunities as I can & we now employ about 4 people in that age group, all from the local Wyndham community. What area of your business are you most proud of? I would say the people side of it, both the staff & the customers. The relationships we’ve been able to build, all the way from the delivery driver, who knows us by name, to almost 95% of our customers who walk through that door. We can greet them by their first name & that’s not just with me, that’s with my staff. That part of the business, that people relationship, is what I’m most proud of. What does this nomination for the Wyndham Business Awards mean to you? It’s validation & recognition that local Wyndham residents can create business opportunities, employment opportunities & obviously where we have a vision & a determination we can make that happen. What do you want your business to be known for? I’d go back to that interpersonal relations, what we would like our customers to remember when they walk out this door is the personal service we provide & to build enduring relationships. That’s what we would like to be remembered for.

Power up at Stockland

Stockland is powering up in innovation, rolling out universal ChargePoint Electric Vehicle (EV) and dedicated Tesla Destination Chargers across 31 of our shopping centres. Electric Vehicles and Tesla owners will be able to charge their cars for free in Stockland retail centres, boosting convenience for our customers while they shop, dine or spend time with family and friends. With Electric Vehicles playing a major role in the future of transportation, Stockland are proud to launch this initiative to meet the ever growing Australian demand whilst maintaining our commitment to sustainability. Our encouragement of Electric Vehicle usage will help reduce toxic gas and carbon emissions into the environment as these vehicles run on electric powered motors. These chargers have the ability to top up an Electric Vehicle’s battery by 20-40% in half an hour on average, saving our customers over $3 in electricity cost. To further support this initiative, Stockland have incorporated designated parking bays for Electric Vehicles across our centres that have the charging units installed. In Electric Car terms, when a conventional petrol powered Vehicle is parked in an Electric Vehicle bay, the Electric Vehicle driver socially refers to this as being ICE’d (Internal Combustion Engine). Therefore, we encourage non-Electric Vehicles to park in regular spaces to free these charge points for their intended use. The centres which currently have Electric Vehicle charging units installed include: • QLD: Burleigh Heads (2 charge points) • NSW: Jesmond (1 charge point), Glendale (1 charge point), Shellharbour (4 charge points), Balgowlah (1 charge point), Cammeray (1 charge point) and Baulkham Hills (2 charge points) • VIC: Point Cook (1 charge point) • WA: Harrisdale (2 charge points) and Baldivis (2 charge points) Furthermore, Stockland is also installing Tesla Destination Chargers over the next twelve months. At present, Tesla drivers can utilise the current charging stations located at our centres for free, provided they utilise their Tesla adaptor to connect to the charging unit. The Stockland shopping centres to have Tesla Destination Chargers installed over the next 12 months include: • QLD: Cairns, Townsville, North Shore, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Hervey Bay (installed), Caloundra, Cleveland, Pacific Pines, Benowa Gardens, Burleigh Heads • NSW: Balgowlah (installed), Cammeray (installed), Green Hills, Jesmond, Merrylands, Baulkham Hills, Wetherill Park, Shellharbour, Bathurst, Nowra, Corrimal, Forster, Tamworth, Glendale, Wallsend • VIC: Highlands and The Pines • WA: Baldivis All our Stockland charge points are located on the PlugShare website (www.plugshare.com) with the aim of accommodating our centre customers over the course of their journey.
