To celebrate local Indigenous artists, a gallery art wall has been created in partnership with The Cultural Centre at Stockland Townsville. Meet local artist Stephen Oliver Sailor, and find out about his work below.
Stephen is a local indigenous artist was born in Townsville. Stephen’s heritage is of Waanyi, Kuku Yalanji and Torres Strait Islander decent. He is an upcoming artist who now has his work in the Big Eye Arts & Cultural Centre Townsville.
Stephen’s work is fresh and new using pastel colours, he includes the style from the desert to the sea using the dot art of his Waanyi background but has also captured the sea with his art of Turtles Stingray and Jellyfish.
Stephen also does his traditional dance and through his dance, tells stories of the animals he paints. He has been dancing and painting since a child and carries on developing his skills and knowledge of his culture to share. He has done many art and dance workshops as far west as Cloncurry (NAIDOC), Hughenden (Dinosaur Festival), Winton (Outback Festival), Charters Towers (Cultural Immersion Program with JCU) and as far south as Proserpine (NAIDOC) and Beaudesert (Arts Ablaze Festival) at the Scenic Rim.
His artwork is a reflection of his surroundings, and his belief that we all have a part to play and remind us of the importance of taking care of the environment and Country.
Stephen’s Artwork is on display in at the Big Eye Arts & Cultural Centre where you will find most of his work.
