To celebrate local Indigenous artists, a gallery art wall has been created in partnership with The Cultural Centre at Stockland Townsville. Meet local artist Michael Sailor, and find out about his work below.
Michael’s Aboriginality is of the Yorta Yorta people of Victoria. They are located around the Murray River along the New South Wales and Victoria border. Echuca and Moama are the towns that are geographical to the Yorta Yorta country.
Micheal’s mother Grace Sailor nee Cooper is Yorta Yorta. His father Jack Sailor is Torres Strait Islander. The Sailor family is of Darnely Island which is located in the eastern regions of the Torres Straits north of Cape York peninsula.
Michael’s works represents his knowledge of his beliefs and traditions, which is presented in a contemporary format still using traditional techniques. His work is part of a movement that promotes and preserves Aboriginal culture as it evolves into the modern day. A blend of many clan groups who have been thrown together creating new styles and art forms.
