Buckle up: utilitarian is one of spring’s hottest trends

Fashion meets function in the form of utilitarian this spring and let’s face it – who doesn’t love a multi-tasker? Taking inspiration from the 70s like many of the SS19 trends, a utilitarian ensemble can be both regiment or relaxed depending on how you put your style stamp on it.

Begin your armed-forces-inspired shop by swapping out your go-to denim jeans in favour of some lightweight joggers with military-inspired details. Whether you decide to reach for a slimline satin pair or embrace the cool-khaki loose-fitting look, pair these with a simple cotton tee, a linen button-up (with rolled sleeves) or tank for the full utilitarian effect and you’ll be making moves in the right direction.

Tough-tailoring encapsulates the vibe of spring trend, though marrying military details with a traditionally feminine cut has some surprisingly stylish results! Think cargo-style dresses in khaki or camel hues, with a midi-length, collar detail and button-tab sleeves – the perfect middle ground between a traditionally masculine aesthetic, and one that’s ideal for the balmy months to come. Alternatively, opt for a utilitarian button-down skirt paired with a blouse and a patent leather mule to balance out the look for work, or embrace a top-to-toe look with a khaki button-up and sneakers. Yes, sir!

If going all-in on the utilitarian trend isn’t typically your style but you want to give it a shot, you can always pick up some military-inspired shoes and accessories to test the waters. A boxy bag, leather boots, black shades and even a slick low bun is going to give you a taste of utilitarian style without fully committing. Alternatively, simply picking up pieces in a neutral colour palette such as beige, khaki, camel and tan are a simple way to fall in line with this uber-cool trend.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a military-inspired trend without some degree of practicality. So, in a two-birds-with-one-stone scenario, combining the jumpsuit trend with the utilitarian trend (and somewhat, the beige trend – triple whammy!) is a spring wardrobe staple piece you simply can’t go without. Roomy-yet-structured, masculine-yet-flattering a jumpsuit allows you to move freely but is also stylishly structured, particularly those with a drawstring or belt.

The utilitarian trend is painting the town khaki this spring summer and functional fashion has secured its place in the urban streetwear scene. Pick up your practical pieces this weekend!
