How to create an Earth Hour sensory basket for kids

Category: kids

Spark their imagination through sensory learning and create an eco-friendly tradition for years to come.

The 2023 Earth Hour is just around the corner but there's no need to leave your kids in the dark. Give them the vital gift of awareness through an DIY Earth Hour Sensory Basket filled with educational activities and eco-friendly presents.

Not only will you be surprised at how quick the little ones are to learn when educating them through sensory play, you’ll be creating memories as a family that they’ll hold onto for years to come. Sensory baskets may even become a regular activity in your household. Learning has never looked so fun!

Craft Activity

First thing’s first, start the conversation with a cool ‘Protecting Planet Earth’ interactive craft activity. As you colour in our beautiful planet, talk to your kids about what they can do to help protect the earth. Whether it’s promising to recycle all the correct materials to help reduce trash in landfills or restoring native plants after bushfires for the animals to eat, it’s all a positive step in the right direction. Simply print out both versions; write your promises on each quarter of the blank version and then cut out the earth, before cutting it again into four quarters. Glue the edges of the earth and paste them over the promises to create a ‘flap’. These, when folded back, will reveal the promises which you can pop up on the fridge to remind the kids each day what they’ve set out to do.

Earth Hour Sensory Basket

The 'Earth Hour' sensory basket is the perfect way to get them started on their eco-journey. Help your kids pledge to give the earth a helping hand by putting it in paint. Frame their Earth Hour pledge and put it up in the house so your little ones can always see it and remember the promise they made to the planet.

Planting Kit

Teach them about what they’re protecting by showing them how truly amazing our Australian flora and fauna is. Inspire the kids to take care of our gorgeous greenery with a native Australian pot plant kit that will let them grow their very own mini native garden. Top tip: include herbs for a greater appreciation of what it takes to get food on their plate.

The animals that call Australia home are a beautiful and diverse bunch, so help the little ones learn about our interesting creatures and critters through an Australian wildlife colouring book. There are plenty to choose from Target, Big W, and Kmart. Then, they can make their own koala buddy as if it leapt right out of their colouring book; all you need is paint, glue, cotton wool balls and toilet paper rolls. Paint the roll in the lovely, fuzzy koala grey and, once it’s dry, squeeze the top of the roll and fold the sides in to make the head. Glue one cotton bud to each side of the folds to make fluffy ears and one more bud in the middle of the roll for a soft tummy. Add an adorable little face and you have a koala-ty friend!

Eco-Bag

Finally, make sure they carry the green vibes wherever they go with a personalised and environmentally friendly eco-bag. Start off with a plain calico bag and whatever decorating tools you have lying around. Let their imagination run wild as they personalise the eco-bag that they can then bring along to the local Stockland centre the next time you duck out for groceries. They won’t want to leave home without it!
