Fathers Day DIY Gifts

Category: kids

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and with it comes the stress of deciding what to buy the special man in your life. If you have a husband, partner, father or grandfather who already has everything, this task is made much more difficult. The solution? Get the kids involved and make Dad a gift he’ll want to keep on his desk at work. Not only are these gifts useful, they will mean so much more than something store-bought.

Dad is guaranteed to appreciate the effort that has gone into his gift and will love the sentimentality of having something on his desk that his children or grandchildren helped create. These three do-it-yourself gifts are simple, inexpensive and effective.

Puzzle Photo Frame

Here’s what you’ll need:
An old puzzle
Markers
Blue paint
Paint sponge and paintbrush
PVA glue
Large craft sticks

Father's Day DIY Gifts

Here’s how to do it:
1. Glue four craft sticks together to form a square, leaving a centimetre overlap on each corner.
2. Paint the frame blue, using a sponge for the larger areas and a paint brush to define the corners. It may take a few coats to produce a vibrant colour. To produce the richest colour possible, ensure you allow 5 minutes’ drying time between each coat.

3. Glue puzzle pieces on to the frame to decorate.  Feel free to use as many pieces as you like. We found that using three alternating colours each side looked the most effective.

4. Using the markers, write “Love You to Pieces” on the cardboard, and take a photo of your children holding the sign.

Wood Pallet Coaster

Here’s what you’ll need:
Mid to light-brown paint
Sharp scissors
Craft sticks
PVA glue
Paint sponge

Father's Day DIY Gifts

Here’s how to do it:
1. Carefully cut the rounded edges off each craft stick. You will need 18 craft sticks for one pallet coaster.

2. Paint both sides and edges of these sticks with a mid to light-brown paint using a sponge. Spread this paint thinly for that textured, recycled-wood look.
3. To assemble, group three lots of two sticks together. These will form the vertical planks that attach the top row of sticks to the bottom four.
4. Glue these pairs of vertical struts to the base, which is set out with one stick on each of the bottom edges, and two supporting the middle.
5. Once the base structure is complete, add six evenly spaced sticks to the top to complete the pallet.  The PVA glue will dry firmly enough to support the weight of a full coffee cup, so Dad doesn’t have to worry about breaking his special gift.

Dad’s Rock

Here’s what you’ll need:
A mid-sized smooth rock
Markers
White and metallic paint
Paint brush
Tissue paper
Gift box

Father's Day DIY Gifts

Here’s how to do it:
1. Paint the rock with a white coat, making sure the paint is even. This will create a base so the metallic colours appear as bright as possible.

2. Have your little one paint the rock in various metallic colours. Allow them to have some fun with the design. For a mottled look, try to make sure they dab the paint on to the rock, instead of swirling the paint all together.

3. Once dry, use a pen to mark “Dad Rocks” on to the face of the rock.
4. Present the rock in a gift box lined with tissue paper for a special touch.
