Imagine if you were invited to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. Well, you’re in luck! On Saturday 19th May we’re all lucky enough to score an invite to the Royal Wedding (well, from the couch anyway!) With approximately 800 dignitaries, officials and notable personalities set to attend, it would be safe to assume that this is going to be the wedding of the year. But the real question is, what will everyone wear?
Although Meghan Markle herself has been known to bend the fashion rules at times, her wedding to Prince Harry will be strictly by the book. Think day dresses and hats for women; and for the men, morning coats or lounge suits will be mandatory.
As far as royal weddings go, it’s a relatively relaxed dress code; and whilst coats and fascinators aren’t often required at your typical Australian wedding, you can still dress like a royal at every nuptial this wedding season.
Floral & Fun
So how do you dress like a royal for a wedding? Whether you consider yourself a Diana, a Kate or a Meghan, you’ll be needing some royal wedding accessories to go along with your royal fashion etiquette. For a style that would be perfectly suited to the upcoming marriage of Harry and Meghan, go for a fun and floral daytime look. Ideally, dresses worn to royal weddings are required to be knee-length. This shift style dress from Katies certainly meets the brief. For a coat that is reminiscent of the one Meghan wore in her engagement announcement, this grey trench coat is a very convincing replica (and less than $100, too). Closed-toe shoes are a must at royal weddings, and this patent pink pair from Novo Shoes will keep you dancing all night long. Finally, for the perfect princess manicure, go for nude or pale pink, just like Kate Middleton did on her own wedding day.
Katies Belted Longline Trench Coat $99.95, Katies Lace Insert Print Shift Dress $59.95, Kmart Felted Floppy Hat $12, Kmart SinfulColors Professional Nail Enamel $4, Novo Shoes Finley Heel $79.95, Rockmans Amber Rose Sequin Scarf $24.99, Strandbags Ruby & Kit Glitter Box Clutch $34.99, Sussan Silver Battered Tear Droplet Earring $14.95
Classic & Tailored
When you think of classy women throughout time, who you think of? Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Kate Middleton are likely to come to mind. The Duchess of Cambridge is known for her elegance and sophistication and her choice of outfit at Harry and Meghan’s nuptials is almost as anticipated as her own wedding dress was back in 2011. Ensure you stick to the modest dress code with a high, scoop neckline that even The Queen will approve of. Shoulders must be covered, but you can still stay on-trend with this faux-fur cropped jacket in this season’s most popular colour—burgundy. This wide-brim hat from Big W and tweed gloves from Rockmans will add another level to your already chic look, whilst still keeping you on-theme. If you’re looking to make more of a statement, carry the burgundy colour through your outfit with a slick of berry lipstick to finish.
Big W B Collection Jet Trilby Hat $7, Big W Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm $17.95, Cotton On Faux Fur Jacket $89.95, Jeanswest Danica Ponte Border Stripe Dress $79.99, Noni B Liz Jordan Sparkle Evening Bag $99.95, Rockmans W.Lane Tweed Gloves $29.99, Target Maya Strap Heel $39.
The key to choosing an outfit worthy of a royal wedding is to think about the formality of the occasion. Are you heading to a garden wedding? Or is black-tie the dress code? In Australia, many brides and grooms choose a cocktail theme for their wedding as it’s a halfway point between casual and formal. The best part about a cocktail dress code? It’s the perfect time to experiment with colour, which is lucky for you because bright is certainly ‘in’ this season. Second to this, the Royals are also partial to colour when it comes to dressing for a royal wedding! Choose one statement piece in a solid colour; this coral knit dress from Jeanswest is bold, but still conservative in style. For the cooler months, pair it with a clean-cut blazer in a contrasting colour. Finally, let your dress be the focal point of the outfit and pare it back with simple, classy accessories. This detailed bag from Strandbags is unique and intricate and will perfectly complement gold jewellery.
