How to incorporate new season colours for SS20
As we move into the final months of the year, the metaphoric clouds have parted, and the sun is shining bold and bright. Spring summer has well and truly arrived and with that, comes the promise of exciting new season fashion, chic trends straight off the runway and above all – a plethora of exciting new colours to don.
The Pantone Colour Institute have summed up the SS20 colour palette as ‘friendly and relatable’, conveying a sense of ease and effortlessness. From warm chocolate hues to vivid saffron and a hint of minty green, we’re sharing the colour palettes you can expect to see everywhere this season – supported by the golden fashionista herself (and our Guest Editor!), Jules Sebastian.
Block of chocolate
This super versatile and wearable colour is your new neutral for spring summer. It literally suits every complexion! Think of chocolate brown as the uber-chic sister to the staple black pieces you wore through winter. And with earthy tones, everything goes! Whether it be a floaty tiered dress like this one from Forever New, or a top and skirt combo in matching hues, more is more with this dreamy palette – and don’t be afraid to break the rules. “I don’t like rules when it comes to colour. If you love it and you’re in the mood for it – wear it boldly,” Jules says. Simply accentuate with gold accessories from Sportsgirl and Angus & Coote, and you’re good to go.

Last season lime green was everywhere, but this year, it’s all about something a little more minty. In fact, neo-mint is one of the shades Jules is most excited to be wearing this season! Translated straight from the runway to your favourite local brands, this cool and refreshing shade is perfect for summer days in the sun. Predicted to be the “millennial pink of 2020” prepare to see green everywhere this season. Worried about incorporating new season colours into your existing wardrobe? “Have a few go-to classics in your wardrobe like a good fitting blazer, denim jeans, fitted tees, etc. and then simply add some seasonal colour into these pieces,” Jules explains. Go for a sea-green shade if your skin is on the fairer side and ramp it up to darker hues if your complexion is more olive. And, if you’re still apprehensive – start small! Sunny side up
Get ready to pack a punch with our final colour trend for spring summer 2020. Between fail-safe tan, marigold yellow and sunny saffron, this optimistic shade will have you blending in perfectly with every sunset this summer. Treat this colour as another one of your neutrals – it works in perfectly with colours like grey, chocolate brown and beige. And, don’t be worried about whether or not you can embrace this summery shade – yellow is for everyone! For fairer complexions, stick to more mustard or darker yellow hues. Whereas olive complexions can pull off more of the buttercream yellow tones. As Jules says, if you love it – wear it boldly!
When it comes to styling, for a more understated look, we’re loving a simple t-shirt combined with a statement skirt and finished off with a versatile crossbody bag from Target. Or for something a little more fun, why not try a funky top like this one from City Chic? And if you’re not big on wearing colour in your clothing, there are plenty of other ways you can inject new-season hues into your look. Jules says, “Buy one piece in a colour that you like – something like a shoe, cami or hair accessory, and then inject that into your outfit.”
