Find out what’s hot in young adult fiction with this handy guide

For us bookworms, winter weekends are the perfect time to snuggle up with some creature comforts and lose yourself in a great book. Finding a new series though, can be a bittersweet experience – because when it’s over, you have to say goodbye to characters you’ve grown to love!

Luckily with young adult fiction at the moment, there’s no shortage of fantastic new series to sink your teeth into. So if you’re hungry for a new world to explore, grab yourself a nice cup of hot chocolate and check out these five new series that we reckon could be as big as The Hunger Games.

Legend – Marie Lu
On the flooded coast of former LA, June and Day, two teenagers from different sides of the tracks live completely separate lives. That changes the day June’s brother is murdered, and Day becomes the prime suspect. As a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues, the pair uncovers the truth of what really happened to June’s brother, and just how far their government will go to protect its secrets.

A perfect novel if you’re having Katniss withdrawals, this dystopian trilogy continues with the electrifying ‘Prodigy’ and concludes with the thrilling ‘Champion’.

The Queen of the Tearling – Erika Johansen
Set in the 24th century, The Queen of the Tearling is the story of a plain and bookish princess named Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, brought up in exile. After her estranged mother dies, Kelsea is forced to take the throne in a time of great unrest in the kingdom. Can she save her kingdom and be the queen she knows she can be? An incredible journey of self-discovery and trial by fire has only just begun.

The Queen of the Tearling is the first in a planned trilogy that we reckon could be huge – especially since Emma Watson has signed on to star in the movie adaptations!

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – Ransom Riggs
Following his grandfather’s murder, 16-year-old Jacob Portman travels to Wales to discover the truth about his grandfather’s mysterious past. A trail of clues leads him to a remote island and a derelict home for ‘peculiar children’.

Released in 2011 with a sequel following in 2014, this mysterious novel has earned fans all across the world including legendary film-maker Tim Burton, who is creating a film version due to be released next year!

The 5th Wave – Rick Yancey
After four waves of alien invasion knock humanity back to the stone-age, 16-year-old Cassie Sullivan is one of earth’s last survivors. With her friends and family gone and hordes of human-looking aliens roaming the country, does she have what it takes to rescue her younger brother Sammy from the clutches of evil?

With the end of the series just around the corner and a film version (starring Chloe Grace Moretz as Cassie) in the works, now is the perfect time to jump on this wave!

An Ember in the Ashes – Sabaa Tahir
Laia is a Scholar living under the brutal rule of the Martial Empire. Elias is the academy’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. When their paths cross they will find their destinies are more intertwined that either could have imagined - and that their choices will change the future of the empire itself!

The beginning of a series that has readers worldwide on the edge of their seats, this incredible and unique mix of Rome and ‘1001 Nights’ is not to be missed!
