The official list of must have Christmas toys for 2019

Category: kids

Santa Claus is coming to town, but we all know that really means you’re the one making the list and checking it twice. So, whether your youngsters have been naughty or nice this year (let’s be real…putting lumps of coal in their stocking was just an empty threat), we’ve garnered the must-have toys at the top of every boy and girl’s Christmas list.

From tiny tots to energetic 10-year-olds, we’ve got toy inspiration to ensure you see all your little one’s faces light up on the main day.

Miscellaneous Toys

CAPTIONS: Big W VTech Singing Bird House $35, Kmart Pram Toy $5, Kmart Sitting Reindeer Toy $10, Target Young Ones Wooden Drum $12, Big W Staedtler Pencil Noris Club 36PK $11.60, Kmart Bluey Friends Plush Toy $15, Kmart Hot Wheels Vehicles $4 each, Kmart Large Wooden Kitchen Playset $89.

Ages 0-2

When it comes to your youngest babies, aged between 0-2, you can’t really go wrong with soft toys. The girls will have a ball cuddling and chewing a new plush toy. If you want to keep it festive themed, head to Kmart where you’ll find a really cute selection of Christmas toys in traditional colours. If your baby boy marches to the beat of his own drum, then he’ll be wrapped with some percussion and toys that interact to his touch.

Ages 3-5

As those aged between 3-5 start to learn some physical independence, there’s arguably nothing sweeter than watching them entertain themselves with imaginary play. Your granddaughter, daughter or niece will squeal in excitement when she discovers a kitchen play set under the tree. She’ll also love getting creative with colouring pencils from Big W, just as you once did.

Boys in this age group will get revved up over Hot Wheels cars, which will inevitably become collector’s items as he grows up. For more than five decades, Hot Wheels has been providing boys (and girls) with engine-fuelled car play. The first toy car to come off American toy maker Mattel’s production line in 1968 was a Custom Camaro. Since then, the company’s been given permission to make scale models of some of the most luxurious vehicles in the world. Some collectors have more than 30,000 toy cars, with one collection valued at a whopping $1million.

If he’s fanboying over the record-breaking ABC KIDS program Bluey (as are you and most other Aussie parents), then a plush toy of Bluey and Bingo will be the gift he really wants. Bluey is a wildly popular kids TV show about the adventures of an inexhaustible six-year-old blue heeler puppy. Reviewers have lauded the creators over their ability to capture how modern parenting really is. It encourages youngsters to live life to the fullest but still includes messages about being kind, sharing and patient, all the while still being funny.

Miscellaneous Toys

CAPTIONS: Big W Toy Story 4 Bo Beep Talking Figure $39, Big W Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Talking Action Figure $39, Target Lego Disney Frozen Arendelle Castle Village $95, Target Star Wars Academy Level 1 Light-Up Extendable Lightsaber $16, Zing Pop Culture Harry Potter Hogwarts 3D Puzzle $68.

Ages 6-10

If all you’ve heard in your household is “there’s a snake in my boot’’ or “to infinity and beyond’’ following this year’s release of Disney’s blockbuster Toy Story 4, you won’t be short on finding merchandise at any of the major retailers. Both boys and girls, aged between 6-10, will be buzzing over a talking figurine of their favourite character, whether it be Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Little Po-Peep, Jessie, Mr Potato Head or Forky. The highly-anticipated movie smashed it at the box office, with critics describing it as the perfect balance between familiarity and novelty (even parents are asking themselves if toys really do come to life!). So, it comes as no surprise Toy Story 4 games, costumes and toys have been hot off the shelf since the film’s release in June.

Girls in this age group will be over the moon with anything to do with the Frozen franchise. Frozen 2, the sequel to one of the most successful animations in Disney history, only hit the box office in November and is loved just as much as the first installment. Needless to say, Frozen merch will ensure you won’t get the cold shoulder from your daughter on Christmas Day. If she’s someone who likes to build or create things in her own time, a Frozen-themed Lego set from Target will be the perfect gift.

Finally, you can’t go wrong with all the latest gizmos and gadgets for your ten-year-olds and tweens. Your son will be stoked with the new Nintendo Switch Lite, so head to EB Games where you can also pick up the hottest games to go with. Get your growing princess a vintage cruiser bike from Kmart, so she can put the pedal to the medal with all her friends. Don’t worry about being a cliché and pop a big red bow on the front!
