2002 - 2006

 The Highlands legacy begins with an estimated size of just over 6000 lots at launch. Villaging becomes an important way in which various areas of land within the community are positioned and sold to potential customers, with Waterview becoming one of the first villages to launch at Highlands.

  • 2002: Highlands is officially launched by Lensworth
  • 2004: Stockland acquires Lensworth and Highlands
  • 2005: First stage by Stockland is delivered
  • 2006: Highlands Lake is completed
  • 2006: Waterside Cafe opens
  • 2006: Mt Ridley Display Village launches

2007 - 2011

As Highlands begins to take shape, so too does its education, retail, parks and sporting facilities, with the opening of three schools, two shopping precincts and a state-of-the-art sports reserve.

  • 2008: Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School opens
  • 2009: Mt Ridley P-12 College opens
  • 2010: Highlands wins three Hume Business Awards for commitment to excellence in providing open space
  • 2010: Mt Ridley Reserve is completed
  • 2010: Highlands Retirement Village opens
  • 2010: Highgate Recreation Reserve opens
  • 2010: Highgate Community Hub opens
  • 2011: Highlands Shopping Centre opens
  • 2011: Aitken Creek Primary School opens
  • 2011: Newbury Corner Store opens
  • 2011: Malcolm Creek Reserve is completed
  • 2011: Highlands Farmers Market commences

2012 - 2016

Welcoming its 10 year and 10,00th resident milestone, Highlands receives national recognition as being Australia's Best Masterplanned Community* twice. An award-winning park is opened, along with several cutting-edge community facilities. 

  • 2012: Highlands welcomes its 10,000th resident
  • 2012: Award-winning Golden Sun Moth Park is completed
  • 2012: Highlands Hotel opens
  • 2012: Hume Global Learning Centre opens
  • 2013: Highlands wins Best Masterplanned Community in Australia*
  • 2014: Community Parkrun commences at Highlands
  • 2015: Highlands wins Best Masterplanned Community in Australia*
  • 2015: Hume Tennis Centre opens

 

2017 - 2021

As Highlands reaches project maturity, further schools, sporting and shopping facilities are opened to cater for the growing population and widespread interests of the community. The Bridges and Vista villages are officially launched, which see great demand from first home buyers, upgraders and investors.

  • 2017: Hume Hockey Club opens
  • 2017: Newbury Primary School opens
  • 2018: Highlands starts sponsoring the Melbourne Wheelchair Tennis Open
  • 2018: Oscar Romero Catholic Primary School opens
  • 2019: Aitken Hill Primary School opens
  • 2019: Craigieburn Junction opens
  • 2019: Sustainable Park is completed

2022 and beyond

Marking its 20th year milestone and over 20,000 residents, Highlands continues to grow. The launch of Brookrise village signifies the community's official expansion into the Mickleham suburb. Highlands comprises of approximately 11,300 lots - almost doubling its size since it was first launched back in 2002!  But the fairytale is far from over, with future parks, sports reserves and shopping precincts expected to launch in the coming years.

  • 2022: Highlands expands to Mickleham with the launch of Brookrise village
  • 2022: Softball Centre opens 
  • 2023: Mt Aitken Reserve opens
  • 2023: Craigieburn Village (anchored by a Coles Supermarket) opens
