Celebrating International Women’s Day with our local community

International Women’s Day is a very special day of the year. It’s a day where we get to celebrate all the incredible women in our lives and acknowledge the hard work, they put into the things they’re passionate about each day. Whether they’re creative chefs serving up delicious dishes for the local community, fashion designers creating gorgeous gowns, or simply hard-working mums who are dedicated to teaching their children how to navigate the world, we’re constantly inspired by the women around us and how their diverse range of skills help to make the world a better place. To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re taking the theme ‘inspired inclusion’ out into our local centres and showcasing some of our incredible retailers, staff, and community members who are paving the way for a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world.

Today, we’re chatting with Shafali Sharma from Priya Point Cook and learning more about them.

I grew up in the hospitality industry and then proceeded to work in the public health sector at the Alfred hospital for almost 3 years. After COVID I decided to rejoin the family business and pursue a passion for hospitality and have been a part of the community since 2020. 

What inspired you to want to open your business?

My parents opened Priya Point Cook in 2009. We were the first fine dining restaurant in the area catering to a 20km radius. I haven't opened the business but I'm working on redefining what Priya means. My parents always taught me to look after our guests, to treat them with respect, serve them food and water and make sure they leave our house happy. Seeing the satisfaction on people's faces after having a good meal and a few laughs made me happy. That's where my parents drew their inspiration from, and their hard work and passion is what I draw my inspiration from and am actively working on taking it to the next step. 

What’s the most rewarding part about running your own business here at Stockland Point Cook?

The diversity of people. No one here is prejudiced about where to eat or go. They are open to trying everything. Stockland has always been good at attracting people from diverse background and works closely with the communities to ensure their needs are met. Stockland also works closely with the businesses to try and increase exposure to the wider market. 

What does the phrase “inspired inclusion” mean to you? 

Inclusivity for individuals or communities that have meaningful ideas stemming from their own backgrounds, that in turn would benefit the wider demographic. In this case, women who have the experiences or education to amplify their own radius and are given a medium to explore that. 

Who are some other women in your community that inspire you?

Indira Gandhi - the first and only female prime minister of India who was assassinated. She was controversial but 10x more impactful. Made decisions that a man may never be able to take. 

My mother- the fearless leader in business who takes risks and supports her team. Whether it's at home or at work.

A few of my beautiful customers who are strong women and leaders in their own industries who also have the most beautiful families. 

What advice would you give to other women who may be looking to open their own business?

Find a niche, avoid saturated markets, protect your ideas and your skills. And always trust the female intuition. It's stronger and more accurate than any AI in the world.
