Celebrating International Women’s Day with our local community

International Women’s Day is a very special day of the year. It’s a day where we get to celebrate all the incredible women in our lives and acknowledge the hard work, they put into the things they’re passionate about each day. Whether they’re creative chefs serving up delicious dishes for the local community, fashion designers creating gorgeous gowns, or simply hard-working mums who are dedicated to teaching their children how to navigate the world, we’re constantly inspired by the women around us and how their diverse range of skills help to make the world a better place. To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re taking the theme ‘inspired inclusion’ out into our local centres and showcasing some of our incredible retailers, staff, and community members who are paving the way for a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world.

Today, we’re chatting with Shagun Oberoi from Just Cuts and learning more about her.

What inspired you to want to open your business?
My husband and I have always prioritised work life balance especially since the birth of our 2 daughters. Both of us were working in a 9-5 office life until 2016 when we took the plunge and decided to open our very first Just Cuts Store to allow me a chance to look after my young girls but also have a work that will allow me to have the balance that we were seeking.

What’s the most rewarding part about running your own business here at Stockland Point Cook? 
Point Cook is a great community and we have been a part of this community since 2011 and have loved every moment here. Point Cook Town Center has been our shopping hub and with access to all amenities in the center, it a very easy one stop shop for all daily needs. It was a natural extension of that feeling that we realised that having a business in this center will help us capture all those people who felt the same as us and will help make Just Cuts a success.

What does the phrase “inspired inclusion” mean to you?
Just Cuts emboidies the phrase to the "T". over 90% of our staff and women who are from various backgrounds. Our hair stylists are young mothers as well as women aged over 60 years. We have women from different ethnicities who work with us and that makes for a very rich working culture. For me, this is inspired inclusion where there is no bar or standard and our workplace welcomes women from all walks of life. 

Who are some other women in your community that inspire you?
We have a great number of women who inspire me in the community. Susan McIntyre is one such woman that I have seen strive hard to reach where she is while keeping her focus on community welfare. Sarah Mitchell who worked on the Point Cook Pop up park is another inspiration. I see Kerrie White from Gracie’s Boutique, Katelyn Day from Cake Creations by Kate as amazing local women with such inspirational stories behind them & are women who believe in supporting each other and helping them in the advancement of their businesses.

What advice would you give to other women who may be looking to open their own business?
Women can achieve anything they set their minds to. In today’s world, there are many opportunities that we can explore and excel in without any fear. If you have an idea, give it a go. Have the confidence and move quickly with your ideas. Have the courage to chase your dreams and convert them into a reality because women can achieve anything once they set their mind to. Setbacks and failures are all part of the process. Embrace them and learn from them and continue to move ahead.
