Celebrating International Women’s Day with our local community

International Women’s Day is a very special day of the year. It’s a day where we get to celebrate all the incredible women in our lives and acknowledge the hard work, they put into the things they’re passionate about each day. Whether they’re creative chefs serving up delicious dishes for the local community, fashion designers creating gorgeous gowns, or simply hard-working mums who are dedicated to teaching their children how to navigate the world, we’re constantly inspired by the women around us and how their diverse range of skills help to make the world a better place. To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re taking the theme ‘inspired inclusion’ out into our local centres and showcasing some of our incredible retailers, staff, and community members who are paving the way for a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world.

Today, we’re chatting with Zenobia Malik from Gaia Studio and learning more about them.

What inspired you to want to open your business?
Opening my hair salon was a dream fuelled by my passion for bringing out the natural beauty in everyone and my desire to create a welcoming space where clients feel valued and pampered. My journey into the hair beauty industry was inspired by my Mum, who I saw provide an inviting and warm space for clients in her own salon. The stories she would share with me about how she would positively impact someone else’s life was always something I admired. I have the belief that a great hairstyle can significantly boost a person’s confidence and self-esteem. Witnessing the transformation in my clients, not just externally but also in how they perceive themselves, motivated me to establish a place where such positive changes happen daily.

What’s the most rewarding part about running your own business here at Stockland Point Cook?
The most rewarding part of running my salon at Stockland Point Cook is the sense of community and the relationships I’ve built with my clients and other local business owners. There’s a genuine camaraderie here that’s hard to find elsewhere. Seeing the smiles on my clients’ faces after a session, knowing I’ve contributed to their day positively, is immensely satisfying. Additionally, being part of a vibrant community that supports and uplifts each other makes every challenge worthwhile.

What does the phrase “inspired inclusion” mean to you?
To me, “inspired inclusion” means creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, valued, and empowered to be themselves, regardless of their background, appearance, or beliefs. It’s about fostering a culture of acceptance and respect that encourages individuality while celebrating our diversity. In my salon, it translates to ensuring that our services, products, and atmosphere are accessible and welcoming to all, creating a space where everyone can feel comfortable and included.

Who are some other women in your community that inspire you?
Every day, numerous women in our community amaze me with their resilience, creativity, and leadership. Take, for instance, Venus behind Alma Organics, an exceptional organic grocery store. Their commitment to organic living, health, sustainability, and well-being is truly outstanding and a significant contribution to the Point Cook community. Equally inspiring are our clients who have faced, or are facing, adversity and tough times. Their perseverance, even in the face of daunting challenges, not only enriches our community but also drives me to stretch my own limits. Their stories of resilience, kindness, and dedication to self-improvement and self-care profoundly move me. It's a reminder of the incredible impact of fostering a community that values resilience and self-care.

What advice would you give to other women who may be looking to open their own business?
My advice for women embarking on the entrepreneurial journey is to hold your vision with unwavering passion and be ready to dedicate yourself fully to its realisation. Cultivate a circle of support, find mentors who light your path with inspiration, and value the lessons each experience brings. You may encounter skeptics within your community or team who don't share your enthusiasm for your vision, and that's perfectly fine. Often, they become unexpected sources of insight. View every challenge as a stepping stone for growth and maintain flexibility in your approach. Above all, recognise that your unique perspective and tenacity are invaluable assets. Let these qualities steer you as you create a business that mirrors your deepest values and passions. Authenticity always wins.
