Jamies Ministry Of Food and Stockland How To set up your kitchen

Presented by Stockland and Jamie's Ministry of Food.

Before you start cooking, here are some simple things you can do to ensure you have a smooth and efficient cook.

1) Give yourself space.
Clutter is the enemy of the cook! Move the kettle, the toaster, this morning’s breakfast dishes, or anything else you don’t need. Cooking goes better when we feel in control of the process and an ordered work space is an important part of this.

2) Get all of your equipment ready for the recipe you’re cooking.
Check the recipe you’re using. It’ll probably ask you to boil water or chop and weigh ingredients. Get all your saucepans, chopping boards and measuring cups ready now so you can concentrate on your cooking.

3) Gather all your ingredients ready on your workbench.
Again preparation is everything. It’s really hard to stir and chop and weigh ingredients at the same time. So measure out your dry ingredients before you start and get everything else chopped, peeled and ready to go.

4) Remove proteins from the fridge.
If the recipe you’re cooking has meat, eggs or another type of protein, take it out of the fridge before you start cooking, so it can come up to room temperature for a more even cook.

5) Secure your chopping board
Simply use a damp tea towel or cloth to secure your chopping board. This will stop it from moving around and allow you to work quickly and safely.

6) Keep a rubbish bowl nearby.
Use a bowl to put your rubbish in and if you compost, a separate one for food scraps. Having these bowls within arm’s reach saves multiple trips to the rubbish bin.

7) Preheat the oven if required.
This will save time when the dish is ready to cook.
