A new state primary school for the Mt Atkinson community

23 March 2023

Stockland Mt. Atkinson has welcomed the purchase of 3.5 hectares of land by the Victorian School Board Authority for the building of a future primary school within its community.

Mt. Atkinson is one of Stockland’s fastest growing communities. Located 25 kilometres west of Melbourne’s CBD, it’s already home to 800 families, with 4,400 families expected to live there upon completion.

The new school will be located on the corner of Trickett Drive and Clara Avenue, Truganina, and in the heart of the Mt. Atkinson Education & Recreation Precinct.

This is the first of three schools which have been proposed for Mt. Atkinson.

The Mt. Atkinson Education & Recreation Precinct already includes the recently opened Mt. Atkinson Children & Community Centre, which has a three- and four-year-old kindergarten and provides a place for maternal and children’s health services, family, and early childhood services, breastfeeding support, parenting support programs, playgroups, immunisations and a wide range of cultural programs and activities.

Stockland Senior Development Manager, Anthony Scafidi said the team is excited to see the Victorian School Board Authority commit to building a state primary school for the growing Mt. Atkinson community.

“As the Mt Atkinson community expands, so do the educational needs of families from kindergarten through to high school. This announcement means children can be taught close by, enabling them to walk or ride to school should they choose,” said Mr Scafidi.

“For more than 70 years, Stockland has been a leading creator and curator of connected communities. We look forward to welcoming the first of three proposed schools into Stockland Mt. Atkinson as we continue growing the Mt. Atkinson Education & Recreation Precinct for our current and future families.”

Minister for Education, Natalie Hutchins said the Victorian School Board Authority is delivering more new schools across Victoria and with the land acquired for this new school, today is great news for families in the Melton region and Melbourne’s west.

“We’ve listened to local families and with today’s announcement of the acquisition of land, we’re a step closer to a new school in the outer west of Melbourne,” said Ms Hutchins.

The Mt. Atkinson Education & Recreation Precinct will offer an array of education options for the Truganina community.

This announcement is part of the Victorian State Government’s commitment to open 100 new schools by 2026.

The interim name for the school is Tarneit Plains Primary School. The school is subject to future funding, with a construction timeline to be confirmed at a later date.

The Victorian School Building Authority is a division of the Victorian Department of Education which is responsible for the construction of new government schools and infrastructure improvements at existing schools.
