Breaking ground on Harrisdale shopping centre

26 June 2015

Stockland today marked the start of construction on its new $51 million Stockland Harrisdale Shopping Centre development. The new 12,200 square metre centre is located within the Stockland Newhaven residential community, 20 kilometres south-east of the Perth CBD and is expected to open in mid-2016.

Stockland Group Executive and CEO of Commercial Property, John Schroder today joined The Hon. Tony Simpson MLA, Member for Darling Range and Minister for Local Government and Mayor of Armadale, Councillor Henry Zelones,OAM, JP to officially mark the beginning of what will become a new era of convenient, local shopping within the community.

John Schroder, Group Executive and CEO Commercial Property at Stockland, said the centre is well located within the $661 million Stockland Newhaven residential community and will service the daily shopping needs of residents, as well as draw customers from a number of other rapidly growing residential communities in the area.

“Upon completion, Stockland Harrisdale will become the new pulsating heart of this local community offering a full retail experience to meet the needs of residents now and into the future.”

Stockland has appointed Doric Group for the construction of the new Stockland Harrisdale shopping centre. The centre will offer a wide retail mix for the community with a focus on fresh food, services and casual dining and will be anchored by the only full-line Woolworths supermarket in the primary trade area as well as a new Aldi supermarket. It will also include some 30 specialty stores, 5 kiosks, 6 pad sites and 500 car parking spaces.

The Stockland Harrisdale Shopping Centre will form the core of Newhaven – Stockland’s award-winning residential community in Piara Waters. The site is well located to draw customers from surrounding suburbs with direct exposure to Nicholson Road, the area’s main North-South arterial link.

The development is expected to generate over 700 jobs during the construction program. Stockland and its retail tenants will also be seeking local residents to work in retail and operational positions, once the development has been completed, with the centre expected to create more than 540 new retail jobs in perpetuity.

The Hon. Tony Simpson MLA, Member for Darling Range said: “It is a very exciting time for Harrisdale and the surrounding areas. In about a year, they will have a modern shopping centre at their doorstep.”

“In January 2009 there were 131 people living in Harrisdale and just over 6 and a half years later there are now over 3,500 residents. This area has experienced significant growth and the shopping centre brings both amenity and employment opportunities to local area residents, said Mr Simpson.”

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said, our residents in the fast growing western suburbs of Harrisdale, Forrestdale and Piara Waters have eagerly awaited the commencement of the Stockland Harrisdale Shopping Centre development.

“Stockland Harrisdale will feature not only an impressive town centre and heart for the community, but much needed and convenient local shopping. It will also generate employment opportunities throughout the construction stage and far beyond”, he said

Due to strong population growth, Stockland expects retail sales in the main trade area to double within twelve years of completion.

“Our leasing activity is already well-underway and we’ve seen a very strong response from retailers eager to capitalise on this unique opportunity with Woolworths and Aldi already on board, explained Mr Schroder.

As another mark of the company’s commitment to the future of the community, Stockland Harrisdale is being designed for improved indoor environment quality using innovative, energy and water saving systems and with thoughtful inclusions such as bike racks for nearby residents to cycle to the centre.

Stockland is targeting 4 Star Green Star Retail ‘Design’ and ‘As Built’ environmental ratings through the Green Building Council of Australia.
