Love your small-scale brewers, distillers and winemakers?

It might not seem the obvious spot, but on the NSW South Coast, business is booming. With dozens of vineyards, breweries and distilleries dotted close to your new home at Forest Reach, there’s something for everyone, even the kids! Here’s our plan for a fun family day out.

Wollongong

It’s worth driving down the dramatic escarpment into Wollongong to see what’s brewing in this regional powerhouse of a city. Drop in to Headlands Distilling Company* in North Wollongong on a Friday or Sunday for a tour and tasting. The company’s products draw on grains from the Riverina paired with hand foraged local botanicals; the flavours created are one of a kind and really provide you with a taste of home!

Everything is done in-house, from fermentation and distillation to bottling. Take a tour of the compact distillery and meet the makers, a great interactive experience to see the grain-to-glass journey.

Nearby is The Illawarra Brewery*, which offers a range of local and Australian craft brews, plus an ocean view (bucket and spades optional for the kids!). Just up the coast a little in Bulli, Resin Brewing* is a beer brewery and brewpub with a fab menu for big and little kids alike. Plus, they hold many family-friendly events like “Blues and Brews”. You’ll need to get in quick, these events sell out!

Kiama to Nowra

Now it’s the wine-lovers’ turn. With a constellation of vineyards concentrated in this area, you can take that special someone on a horse riding tour of the vineyards and countryside with Eqwine Escapes*. It’s a truly memorable experience. Crooked River Wines* is located just off the Princes Highway but offers a gorgeous view of the vines and rolling green hills. Taste the best of what your new region has to offer and enjoy its wines over a meal in the restaurant, where you can kick off lunch with oysters from Tuross Head in the Eurobodalla.

Continue past Berry to Silos Estate* (also home to super-fast EV charging stations and a helipad). Fashioned from a 19th-century dairy farm, the estate incorporates a cellar door and is a serene getaway experience for visitors. It offers a range of activities and amenities including horse riding, picnics, vineyard tours and fine dining. Silos Estate is a popular destination for weddings and events, as well as for those seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Wollongong.

Trace the Shoalhaven River’s northern bank east to reach Two Figs Winery*, with extraordinary hilltop views over the river, and then head to the Coolangatta Estate Winery, the South Coast’s most-awarded winery. Coolangatta Estate* occupies the site of the first European settlement on the South Coast - a great one for history buffs! Having too much fun? You can stay in one of the convict-built rooms or suites, or bunker down in the converted stables.

Jervis Bay to Batemans Bay

Further afield at Huskisson (famous for winter whale-watching), head to Jervis Bay Brewing Co.* for live music, food trucks (there’s a different one each day) in the beer garden and the intriguingly named brews that reference local history and landmarks. True adventurers can even nurse a pomegranate sour, a local specialty.

Tucked into the hinterland behind Mollymook is Cupitt’s Estate*, where an abandoned creamery dating from 1851 has become the estate’s cellar door. Enjoy views of Burrill Lake and Pigeon House Mountain as you explore this popular family-run enterprise that includes an on-site winery, brewery and fromagerie. The fine-dining restaurant showcases produce from the on-site organic kitchen garden. There’s also more casual lawn and deck dining (think pizza, grazing boards and cheese platters) where the kids can run amuck or dance away to the local bands - your furry friends are even welcome to join to make it a truly fantastic family day out.
