Celebrate Summer at Forest Reach

It’s the best time of the year! Here at Forest Reach, just 18kms south-west of Wollongong, there’s sun, surf and plenty to occupy the whole family these holidays. 

Here’s what you can expect in and around Forest Reach this holiday season! 

Sunset Cinema at Wollongong Botanic Gardens 

Surrounded by the pleasant blooms of Illawarra’s beautiful Botanic Gardens, the Sunset Cinema* is a must over the holiday season.  

The festive atmosphere is a popular drawcard, so it’s often sold-out days before during this time of the year. The famous choc tops and food van from His Boy Elroy*, a well-known local burger restaurant, also receives rave reviews.  

This year the cinema is showing a good mix of popular Christmas favourites, like Love Actually, and recent releases, like Top Gun Maverick, so there’s plenty for everybody to enjoy.

School Holiday program of activities 

Forest Reach and Illawarra’s south are bustling with school holiday activity programs that will have kids seeing off the year in style. 

Our favourites are hosted by renowned family favourites, the Science Space*, in Wollongong city.  

This year they are celebrating with all manner of science activities. There is a Lego Master’s program, workshops for game designers, and many more great activities to entertain the kids these school holidays.  

Wollongong New Year’s Eve fireworks 

The best thing about the Wollongong NYE fireworks*, hosted in the central area of the city at Osborne Park, is that revellers don’t have to squish together to see the action.  

The fireworks are shooting higher in the sky than ever this year, so people can spread out along the coast and still have an excellent view. 

Starting from 6pm until the end of the 9pm fireworks, many bring a picnic blanket and find a grassy spot anywhere throughout the Harbour precinct. There are food stalls to enjoy and roving entertainment for the evening. 

The best vantage points, aside from Osborne Park, are likely to be close to Stuart Park* by North Beach, all the way to the Wollongong Head Lighthouse*.
