As Spring approaches, there is no better way to kick-start your day than to stop at one of the many local cafes in the area - not only for your caffeine fix but to enjoy the amazing takeaway breakfast and lunch menus on offer too. After all, nothing accompanies a coffee better than a classic cheese and tomato toastie!

Try these café favourites less than 5km from Stockland Haven:

Café Cubin (1.6km):
Nestled in the heart of Altona North, Café Cubin is truly a local’s favourite. The cafe has an emphasis on fresh and healthy over greasy. Croissants, bagels and sourdough are the picks of the lunch options (the salmon, cream cheese and rocket bagel is a highlight), and smashed avo and eggs Benedict are favourites at breakfast. The chicken schnitzel roll is also perfect for a hearty takeaway lunch.

The Jolly Miller Café (1.6km)

The Jolly Miller story began in the early 1990s with a humble bakery patisserie in the small country town of Gisborne in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. The word soon spread and there are now Jolly Miller café patisseries across Melbourne offering quality barista made coffee, wholesome food and delicious pastries and the most decadent of homemade cakes. Indulge in a pastry to go and forget your lockdown blues!

Stepping Stone Café (2km)
A place where they are so passionate about their coffee and desserts, they consider it their art. Owned by fourth-generation ‘Westies’, Stepping Stones is a fabulous name for the area honouring the large stones that cross the hidden gem Newport Lakes. Expect sweet and soft brioche bacon and egg rolls, nougat bombolini, croissants and chocolate peanut brownies – the perfect afternoon treat.

Elephant Café (2km)
Located in the very cool Newport area, newly opened ‘Elephant’ offers an ethical edge, so much of their menu is vegan or gluten free with zero preservatives. TIP – Try the elephant selection breakfast board for a scrumptious and hearty family breakfast.

85 Espresso (3km)
Located in the heart of trendy Spotswood, 85 Espresso has built a strong cast of regulars that love the tasty coffee and warm, rustic feel of the venue. Rich ingredients are on the menu, including sticky black rice with coconut yoghurt, passionfruit and fresh mango; ricotta waffles topped with poached rhubarb and drizzled with maple syrup; cauliflower and cheddar croquettes; and the gluten free quinoa fritters served with cumin yoghurt and a lime & mint salad (just to name a few!).

Duchess of Spotswood (3km)
The Duchess of Spotswood manages to integrate the key elements of Melbourne cafe culture. It is owned and operated by New Zealander Bobby Green (formerly of Auction Rooms) and Andy Gale (who was previously the head chef at the Station Hotel in Footscray). Green’s experience dictated that the cafe began with a focus primarily on the coffee but the food soon took over. The coffee is of course still fantastic – they’ve been applauded for their finesse with Auction Room’s Small Batch specialty blends. Our recommendation? A chicken or steak sandwich, especially when paired with fresh homemade lemonade.

Leroy’s (3.2km)
Leroy’s is a friendly cafe that actively welcomes young families and their four-legged friends. The backyard is purpose-made for the little ones, with a sandpit, blackboard and playground. Around the perimeter of the backyard area, there are planter boxes brimming with herbs and fresh veggies that are used in the kitchen every day. The menu is broad, with something for everyone. Go simple with granola or one of several avo toast variations; or make like food athlete with the Weekend Warrior – thick-cut bacon, braised beef cheek, corn fritter, onion puree, black pudding crumb, mushroom, egg and sourdough. YUM!
