Harrisdale mural celebrates community diversity
Community and diversity are two of the defining themes of the new Stockland Harrisdale Shopping Centre which is on schedule to open in June. As the centre evolves to become a place for everyone to enjoy, works are underway for a colourful mural to feature on the new building to represent the growing local community.
Acclaimed contemporary artist Chris Nixon will ‘curate’ an original mural on the northern wall of the new Stockland Harrisdale for the local community.The works will be produced over five consecutive days from Monday 16th May.
Chris Nixon said, “My mural concept depicts birds from the area of Harrisdale and the greater City of Armadale. The birds are a combination of those endemic to South Western Australia and others that are migratory, this is to symbolise the biodiversity of the area and represent the migratory nature of the community of Harrisdale celebrating many different backgrounds.”
The Public Art Project at Stockland Harrisdale is part of a longer term strategy tobring the community together. It hopes to engage and reflect the new, confident sense of local identity that is growing in the community by building a sense of place that engages and inspires.
Prue Cunningham, Development Manager at Stockland Harrisdale said the mural will provide a unique focal point and point of difference that reflects the diverse and vibrant culture that is growing in the local community.
“We want this mural to engage with individuals, encouraging discussion and thought within the community. This piece of public art will be a great feature of the centre, reflecting the people and environment of the City of Armadale while adding an additional splash of colour and cool factor to the centre.”
“Public art is another example of how we’re working to create the new Stockland Harrisdale as an exceptional neighbourhood centre. Upon completion, the centre will be a vibrant community hub that will act as the Town Centre; a place for leisure, discovery and fun.”
Construction of the $51 million centre located in the Newhaven community, 20 kilometres south-east of the Perth CBD is progressing along on time and on schedule. The new 12,200 square metre centre will offer a wide retail mix for the community with a focus on fresh food, services and casual dining.
The ‘canvas’ for the new artwork will be located on the external side wall of the centre, near Aldi. Customers can follow the artworks progress via the Stockland Harrisdale Facebook page www.facebook.com/stocklandharrisdale
Prue Cunningham continues, “Upon completion, Stockland Harrisdale will become the heart of this local community offering a full retail experience to meet the needs of residents now and into the future.”
As another mark of the company’s commitment to the future of the community, Stockland Harrisdale is being designed for improved indoor environment quality using innovative energy and water saving systems and with thoughtful inclusions such as bike racks for nearby residents to cycle to the centre.
Stockland is targeting 4 Star Green Star Retail ‘Design’ and ‘As Built’ environmental ratings through the Green Building Council of Australia.
