How to create an eggshell herb garden

Category: home and DIY

Every year, millions of people around the globe band together to participate in Earth Hour. The idea for Earth Hour was born right here in Australia, and now over 190 countries participate each year, and ensure they’re taking time out for nature. If you’re wanting to spend Earth Hour with your kids this year, helping them learn more about the planet we call home, then why not help them create their own eggshell herb garden?

Eggshells are high in calcium carbonate, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which are all important minerals that strengthen the cell walls of plants and help them grow. This means they’re a great plant fertiliser as they can help improve the health of outdoor garden soil, houseplants, vegetable gardens, and herbs.

So, this Earth Hour, instead of throwing away your eggshells, why not use them to create an environmentally friendly mini herb garden with the kids? Simply follow our step-by-step guide and watch your own mini herb garden come to life thanks to the power of eggs!

What you’ll need:

A carton of eggs

A small pot (for boiling your eggs)

A teaspoon

Soil

Herbs of your choice

Googly eyes (optional)

Glue (optional)

Method:

Step one

Boil your eggs and place in iced water to cool.

Step two

Once cooled, peel the top of the eggshell off the egg and delicately scoop out the boiled egg with a spoon. Leave the eggshells to dry completely to remove any traces of bacteria. The scooped out boiled egg will make a nutritious snack while you wait!

Step three

Using your spoon, scoop soil into your eggshells filling them halfway.

Step four

Place your herbs into the eggshells, lightly patting the herbs roots into the soil with the back of a spoon. Finish filling the eggshell with soil and lightly water.

Step five

Decorate your eggshells as much as you like (we used googly eyes from Kmart) and place them back into the carton, so the eggs remain upright and stable.

Now that you’ve created your garden, watch as the eggshells nourish your herbs and help them grow! Earth Hour is all about immersing ourselves in nature and protecting our planet, so the next time you’re whipping up a delicious egg dish, take the discarded shells outside and add them to your garden soil, so you can help your outdoor plants thrive just as much as your herb garden.
