How to make faux agate coasters

Category: home and DIY

When you think of arts and crafts where does your mind go? Perhaps you get flashbacks to your primary school art studio or maybe you look to the fridge where the kids’ stick-figure drawings hang. Sure, they come with great memories, but chances are you don’t consider craft something many adults partake in, right? Well did you know there are actually a heap of benefits to crafting as an adult? Think enhanced cognitive abilities, stress reduction, and it’s fun-inducing (duh).

So, with that being said, we think it’s about time to get crafty, which is why we’ve created this easy step-by-step guide to DIY faux agate coasters. It’s a great way to get back into arts and crafts, and the best part is that you’ll be left with something that you’ll likely use all the time (no more cup-stained tables!).

What you’ll need:

Product captions: Kmart Air Dry Clay $3, Kmart 25 Pack All Media Artists Brush Set $7.50, Kmart 12 Pack Acrylic Paint $4.50, Big W Wiltshire Classic Rolling Pin $10.

  • Air dry clay

  • Acrylic paint (blue, green, white, black, and gold)

  • Paint brushes

  • Rolling pin

  • Water

How to do it:

Step one

Soften the clay by warming and kneading it with your hands. Add a dash of water to ensure the texture is workable (warning this might get messy!). Use your hands to shape the clay into a ball and then use the rolling pin to roll it into a circular shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect – remember, agate slices are organic and naturally occurring, so irregular shapes will help make the end product more realistic!

Step two

Now it’s time to get creative! Paint various shades of blue and green in circular shapes and let dry.

Tip: if you don’t consider yourself to be a particularly artsy person then simply start off by getting some inspiration on Pinterest of what agate slices really look like. Once you have an idea of what you want yours to look like, begin to paint a light base (this will ensure the paint blends seamlessly). Before the base layer dries, add a dark circle in the centre and line it with various colours and shades.

Step three

Use gold paint and a small paintbrush to paint around the edge of the coaster. Let dry for 24 hours.

Step four

Don’t forget to style your coasters on a coffee table, side table, or countertop!

There you have it, agate coasters crafted to perfection. So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and treat yourself to a crafternoon – you deserve it!
