DIY Spice rubs

Category: food

Feeling unsure where to start on Father’s Day? Looking for help finding the right gift for the father figure in your life? We’ve got just the solution for that! Chances are a homemade gift will be the way to their heart. It shows you’ve put time and effort into making something you’ll know they’ll love. After all, that’s what Father’s Day is all about – it’s a day to show your dad how much you appreciate everything they do for you (because we know they do a lot!). It’s almost like dads have their own love language – they might not explicitly say, ‘I love you’ – but they do show their love through other gestures like offering unsolicited advice or waking up at the crack of dawn to drive us to footy practice. So, we think all dads deserve a pretty special gift, right?

This year, show Dad some love with DIY spice rubs. Whether it be for your dad, grandparent, uncle, or even teacher, these spice rubs are sure to bring a smile to their face! Plus, they look like they could be straight out of a gourmet grocery (without the gourmet price tag, that is). Bonus points if you make a coupon book and handmade card to go with them!

Below, we show you how to make four different spice rubs that are ideal for garnishing meals, flavouring burger patties, marinating steak, and seasoning chicken. The best part? There’s only two steps for each spice, so it’s super easy!

Herb garnish

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 x glass jars (Kmart has so many options to choose from!)
  • Twine or ribbon (we got ours from Big W)
  • Gift tags

  • Thyme
  • Ground Coriander

Add equal parts rosemary, cumin, thyme, and coriander into the jar. Securely put the lid on and shake well until combined.

Chicken seasoning

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 x glass jars (Kmart has so many options to choose from!)
  • Twine or ribbon (we got ours from Big W)
  • Gift tags
  • Cumin
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Cinnamon
  • Salt

Method

Step 1: Add equal parts cumin, paprika, garlic powder, and half parts cinnamon into the jar. Securely put the lid on and shake until combined well.

Final step: Now that you’ve got all your spices made, all you have to do is label them! We recommend using a gift tag from Big W or Kmart and some string or twine. Simply thread the labelled tag onto the twine and secure it in a bow around the jar.

All that’s left to do now is wrap them up and show your dad how much you appreciate them! From the Stockland family to yours, Happy Father’s Day.
